Just remembered that my breeder gave me a signed registration form for my GSP. Can anyone tell me whether it is worth sending it in and paying the fee? I will not be showing or breeding from him. Thanks x

We've just got a puppy, and registered our ownership with the KC. I thought you had to legally but reading the info below in the link it doesn't actually say that as far as I can see. Like you, I'm not planning on breeding or showing but I suppose it's an official record that he's mine. It only costs £15, details here www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/1762

No point at all if you're not showing or breeding.

For proof of ownership, a microchip is more to the point.

We actually sent the form from the breeder and the fee specified on it, had it returned saying it had gone up 3 quid or something, DH thought that was a bit pissy and didn't bother. The dog does not appear to mind Grin

What Grimma says Smile

shoutymcshoutsmum · 02/03/2012 16:46

Puppy has been microchipped. Not sure if I could find the form even if there was a particular reason to do so Grin. Certainly won't go for a hunt if there is no value in registering him!

I did with my dog (PFB Blush) but I don't think there's any great reason for doing it.

MothershipG · 02/03/2012 18:08

I didn't send the form off with my first dog but then when she was 3 we started doing agility and I had foolish Smile hopes of competition so I sent them off then. So if you think that you might ever do some sort of activity with him it might be worth it?

kid · 03/03/2012 15:11

I got the forms from my dog's breeder but I haven't sent them off yet. We've had him for 19 months so I doubt there is any reason to send them off now.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 03/03/2012 15:40

I sent mine off and got a copy of my dogs pedigree too but it just made me feel bad as all his relatives were gundog champions and were all in red. I feel I have a potential champion snoring on my sofa, if only I knew what to do with him Grin

JasperJohns · 03/03/2012 15:44

We did, but for no good reason. Perhaps we thought he hadn't cost quite enough Confused

trice · 03/03/2012 15:50

The kennel club are evil though. Don't send them money.

Piffle · 03/03/2012 17:01

That means the KC still think the breeders own your dog though...

yesbutnobut · 03/03/2012 17:40

Piffle - does that matter? This must apply to a huge number of pet owners. My breeder mentioned that very few people who take her pups bother to change the registered owner at the KC. I wasn't planning to myself as not planning to show/breed.

Piffle · 03/03/2012 20:11

Not usually but I'd make sure I'd done it... FRom the KC here

Particular attention should be paid to the following notes

This application must be made by you, the owner(s) and not a third party ? failure to do so may result in cancellation of the application or registration.
Kennel Club registration does not equate to legal ownership. This application is to confirm the change in registered ownership. It is not intended to represent any form of contractual arrangement or document of sale between the previous owner and yourself as the new owner.
It is important for all transfers of registration, that you hold and retain the previous registration certificate signed by the registered owner, including any other previous registered owners, to confirm the consent to the transfer. Failure to produce evidence of such consent if so required may result in the cancellation of the transfer of registration.
The registration certificate is a record which may be called upon by the Kennel Club to be produced in the event of a dispute or for any other verification purposes in the future.
GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2012 12:16

Those KC notes seem to me to confirm that for most people it's irrelevant.

shoutymcshoutsmum · 04/03/2012 15:14

I also can't see that those KC notes change anything. Good legal drafting - lots and lots of words which don't really matter to the man on the street or in this case the lady cuddling the dog ;)

Well having returned a dog to a breeder once it was very important at that time as it ended up in a big dispute...
But since I show mine, I guess for me it's a given...
