Bit of a sad one, the owners emigrated and made sure that their beloved dog was rehomed a good few months prior to them leaving so that any teething issues could be sorted out. Anyway, long story short, a year later the 'new home' have decided that they cant cope with two dogs and need to rehome this one.

I have seen pics of her, beautiful girl that she is. Spayed, chipped, vaccinated, good with children.

Due to her age (5) and breed, and colour (black/tan) going into rescue wouldnt be good for her. She has always lived with a family.

If anyone knows of anyone - experienced dog people, please let me know ASAP.

Jax,

My brother and his wife are looking for a dog. His old shepherd died last year, so hes been dogless since then. They have just (2 months) ago moved into a house, nice garden, near to the local park.

Bro works full time, but his wife stays at home. No kids yet, and no other animals. They only really started looking in the last week or so, as he wants the "right" dog, not just any old dog!

Think hes contacted his local rescues but im not sure where hes at with going to see any, but I can ask him. Hes in the Midlands.

fallen, this sounds promising. If you PM me, I can give more details. It isnt a shepherd... but she is beautiful.

If I didnt have my 2, I would have her in a heartbeat.

She sounds lovely. Our bitch is getting on a bit, and I hope we aren't without one for long. But... we have 3 dogs and really, much as I'd love to take on another, we can't afford it. I hope this dog finds a happy new home very soon.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 29/02/2012 19:35

Can you tell us the breed, you don't say in OP, is there a reason for this?

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 29/02/2012 21:36

toomuch she is a X breed - rottie and Great DAne... which sounds huge, but she isnt really. Larger than a lab but definitely not Dane sized.

I didnt say in OP as I forgot. Blush

And also because I dont want her to be used as a penis extension. Wink

She's not that kind of girl. Grin

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT do this type of private rehoming on MN. This poor dog has already been through enough bounces. Please contact a rescue who can do proper homechecks and will make sure the dog has LIFETIME backup if the adoption goes wrong for any reason. Many rescues do not keep dogs in kennels, but use foster homes. Neither her colour nor her size are in any way a barrier to her being a rescue dog or being successfully rehomed. Iron Mountain here specialise in large breeds - they would be my first port of call, and can provide specialist advice too.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 01/03/2012 08:18

Scuttle, I am not naive. I am an experienced doggy person and Iron Mountain are full to bursting! I have used them in the past and they are fab.

I will contact the person I know at IM and see if they have any fosterers in mind.

And also Scuttle, if you think for one second that this dog would just get rehomed via MN or anywhere else without a second thought from me then you dont know me very well at all. Sad

You're right - I don't know you at all. Sad

And that's precisely what's so worrying about your OP.

I'm sure you are absolutely committed to this dog's situation and want to do the right thing - but surely that is going to be going through an appropriate specialist rescue who can place this dog in the right forever home.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 01/03/2012 14:23

Scuttle, Im just reaching out, while I hear back from contacts etc. And you know what? As much as a rescue would be an better option, Ive had a look and they are struggling to rehome dogs that dont have any issues, some been in kennels for over a year. There just arent enough fosterers around. Sad

If I can find this dog a suitable home, and believe me, my criteria is probably stricter than a lot of rescue places then surely not using valuable resources of rescue is a better option? This is an 'easy' dog, I think that rescue is better for dogs who have issues of one sort or another.

scuttle, have sent you a PM. Smile

I agree with doing this through a proper rescue. I'm not sure why you think that would be a bad idea for her Confused. We have two Rotts, who both came to us through rescue at over 5 years old - they were well cared for and the rehoming process was very thorough. Going into rescue is not great for any dog, but it's usually better than any of the alternatives.

The difficult thing will be finding a rescue place though. It's tricky that she's a cross-breed - I believe the Rottweiler Rescue Trust (based in the SE) have occasionally taken Rott crosses, though last I heard they were full with a waiting list, and prioritising proper emergency cases where the dog's life/safety is at risk. They might be able to advise though.

Poor dog :(

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 01/03/2012 19:14

Ephiny, I would rather a place be used for a dog in dire straights, this dog isnt. And as you said, rescue is full to bursting, with waiting lists.

There just isnt room in rescue, its as simple as that. But she is fine at the moment and I will take her here if that situation changes.

What about if you were to foster her on behalf of the rescue, so they could do the home checks etc ?

minimuu · 03/03/2012 18:27

Problem with rehoming yourself is that there is no legal contract to look after the dog for life - which the dog would get if a rescue was used. Thinking of other threads on here at the moment it does show how important that is for the dog.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/03/2012 21:23

willow I havent ruled that out - but I already have two large dogs here - that are mine, and I fear that if I had her, I wouldnt want to let her go...

I know mini Ive had to stay away from 'those threads' at the moment.

I can get a legal contract drawn up, but to be honest, Im not sure its worth it. And if for whatever reason there was an issue there is support in place to help and I am on hand if necessary for emergencies.
