How do you do it? We have a lab and a fairly large garden. He has the run of the garden except the grass, which is fenced off to keep it clean for the children. He obviously likes weeing on grass because he does it through the little fence onto the grass. The spot that he has chosen is right next to a gate which lets you onto the grass area and gives access to the garage (which we're in and out of a lot). That area is now ruined. He has killed the patch of grass and it absolutely stinks! He could not have picked a worse spot. So, how do I train him to do it elsewhere and/or discourage him from doing it there.

Thank you very much!

I know you can get a chemical spray for indoors, not sure if it would work outside. Have you tried your vet? They might be able to recommend something.

I would hose the area down really well, and chuck a couple of buckets of hot water with biological washing powder dissolved in it over the fence panels to eliminate his scent. Then use the spray Mrs JB recommends, every day, until he loses interest in that corner.

Could you put a temp fence of chicken wire up to keep him away, or take him out first thing on a lead?

Can you lure him to another (desirable wee place) area with a treat and then use your cue for weeing-on-demand and then treat +++ when he does it there.

I successfully trained my bitch to pee on a strip of gravel rather than the grass in our garden just by luring and treating. Took a while but no more brown patches on the lawn.

Thanks for the advice. All sounds very sensible and achievable. Will get to work tomorrow. In the grand scheme of things it's not a major problem, I would just rather he did it somewhere else!

Thanks again. Will let you know how we get on.

You can get a thing called the Pee Post (definitely available from Pets at Home) - it's a yellow spike laced with 'please pee on me' pheromones, you just whack in it the ground somewhere you're happy for the dog to pee and that should be that :)
