Does anyone on MN not just feed ordinary bog standard complete dog food?

I have fed my dogs on your run of the mill fairly cheapish dry complete dog for for YEARS with no issue.

I am wondering if we are getting into a trap of having to spend a fortune on all this special food sometimes costing 40 to 50 pounds per sack.

Are we being taken for a ride? I have pedigree springers and when I read threads on here about what others feed, sometimes i feel guilty, but when thinking more about it I am not sure If we are getting dragged into spending more than we need.

So, I am looking for other cheap feeders, because I cannot be the only mner!

We mostly feed just a dry complete food, our dogs seem to do fine on it. It's not a particularly cheap one (Orijen), but I don't want to use one with grain/cereal filler in as younger dog in particular doesn't get on with this, and used to have digestive problems on other foods we'd tried.

What sort of 'special food' are you buying, OP? Who do you think is 'dragging you into' buying it? Confused. I think it's often just a case of trying different things and finding what suits your dog best, while being manageable within your budget and lifestyle. It's your decision to make, not anyone else's.

I fed mine on Tesco dog food and he was fit and happy on it until he became ill with something not food related. Unfortunatley he is not likely to survive his illness so he is now living on fish in batter and cake ( with vet's full approval).

chappie- she has problems and though its still rank this is the best we've found by far.

Comparing costs is a bit silly really, a gsd is going to eat a completely different amount to a pom

My springer has natures diet and James welbeloved - followed the vets advice it's a little more expensive but she had trouble/ was sick with other brands

James Wellbeloved or Royal Canin for mine.

Fed my old dog on Bakers - didn't realise it was the stuff of the devil. She had bad skin all of her 14 years - if only I had known.

Our first Cocker started on dry puppy PC because that's what he'd been weaned onto. I'd learned about the content of dog food tins and also had the recommendation from two vets about Chappie tinned food. I warned my parents that it stank, but that it was really good value for money and the dog would love it and have a wonderfully shiny coat. They were quite relieved as it was also one of the cheapest available.

I'd always recommend it.

Forgot to mention my bf feeds his dog on dry PC Adult complete. She looks fantastic but I'd prefer that she had something else. Unfortunately bf doesn't agree so I'm leaving it alone!

15kg costs approx £18 in Sweden -.-

We inherited our lab from people who had always fed him on Wagg, so we have continued this, with treats, chews, bones etc as extra treats (also toast crusts, grapes, cheese and whatever else he can get off ds before I come back from the kitchen! Grin ) . He is healthy weight, good coat, no tum or poo problems.

ChewingGum · 09/03/2012 09:51

toomuch. i thought grapes were poisonous for dogs?

Funnily enough, i never knew that onions were bad too, and have fed ours on no end of shepherds pie leftovers over the years, with no problem.

Those on chappie, do you mean dry dog food or the stinking tins that you feed?

Stinking tins for me.

Well.. not ME obviously...

ChewingGum · 09/03/2012 12:11

thanks boom. When one of mine was in the vet for a couple of days last year, it was deffo stinkng tinned chappie they were feeding him. So if a vet can feed it, then I reckon it must be a good one.
