We decided to do one of those cheek-swab home test kit thingies, as everyone kept trying to guess what was in the mix, and just got the report:

25% Goldie, 25% Staffy, 50% 'mixed breed' meaning 2 grandparents a total mishmash of all sorts - apparently (Hmm) including Newfoundland and some sort of hairless American terrier.

I'm not at all convinced by the last two (dab of lurcher in there wouldn't have surprised me, but they don't mention that) but I can definitely see the Goldie, and already had guessed the Staffy. The best bit is that I can prove our very-sure-of-himself vet wrong - he was SO sure Mouse was 50/50 lab/staff!

Honestly, dh and I were so excited to open the report - it reminded me of finding out the sex of our babies Blush

Blush

Yep, silly thing to post really, though would make me feel less silly to know if anyone else had done one of these...and found it equally riveting...

Didn't even know you could get such things!

Everyday is a school day!

BehindLockNumberNine · 25/02/2012 10:22

How cool! I gues the reason they did not list lurcher is because a lurcher is already a cross, so the it could well be that the 50% mixed breeding included any type of sighthound hence the hint to lurcher in his appearance.

How cool! Did it cost a lot? I would love to know what Sam is crossed with. We know he is a whippet based lurcher and is (based on looks) probably at least 75% whippet, but would love to know what the rest of him is...

And haha at the sure-of-himself-vet. Are you going to tell him??

BehindLockNumberNine · 25/02/2012 10:23

ignore random use of 'the' in the second line...

ragged · 25/02/2012 10:35

How reliable are these tests?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 25/02/2012 12:46

Ooh. Now that is interesting. I wonder if one of these tests would be able to pin down Jasper's various spaniels heritage? Oh, and can we have an up to date pic of Mouse :)

ednurse · 25/02/2012 12:50

I'd love to do this for my Beagle. She is VERY obviously a Beagle but her front legs are a little shorter than they should be and she's quite long Grin

Think there's maybe a bit of Bassett in her from somewhere.

Elibean · 25/02/2012 19:55

It cost £59.95 - a tad extravagant, but as dh was obsessed curious he didn't mind Grin

I wasn't going to bother, but soo many people asked - and many were absolutely certain that he was Ridgeback or Lurcher or Staffy or Pointer or Beagle X (you get the picture) that we couldn't resist.

Supposedly the 25%+ bits are very very accurate, and I have to say they make total sense for Mouse - he's got obvious Staffy bits (back leg stance, something in the eyes, broad slightly wrinkly forehead, friendliness) and obvious gun dog (big floppy ears, longer snout, longer legs, soppiness) which we thought was Lab, but Retriever makes more sense because he looks more like one, facially, than a Lab somehow.

Apparently, anything around 12% or less you don't expect to see physical characteristics anymore. Two of Mouse's grandparents are total 'crossbreeds' which means no one genetic breed takes majority rule - so imagine something Pointy in there somewhere. The report says 'probably Borzoi' but would think there are more common Hounds out there mating with Goldies and/or Staffies in County Wicklow, no?! Grin

Very easy test to get and do, so if you are curious and don't mind the £60 - I'd say worth it!

Wow! Did not know you could do this.

Whatever Mouse is, he's very cute (and I LOVE his name!).

Elibean · 26/02/2012 11:36

He thinks he's cute too Smile

He's a lot bigger now - will update photo soon!

I didn't know you could do it either, my very nice but slightly-annoying vet told me, in a 'if you don't believe me you can prove it with a dna test' sort of way Wink

how cool :) I wish we'd know you could do that when our last dog was still here, we'd have loved to know more about what she was (we guessed at collie x lab but there was something else too)

given that the vet almost dared you to do it, I think you need to tell him!
