Told off for walking dog past nursery

Walking my DC to school this morning, springer spaniel with us (on a lead obviously). Walking past a nursery, a little girl hurtles towards him, grabbed back by her mum who then shouts "What are you doing with that bloody dog outside a nursery?" DS2 grabs my arm asking why she is shouting at us, I managed to glare at her and sweep straight on past. (Telling him when out of earshot it's because she is a silly woman who couldn't see our dog was on a lead and under control.) I am so cross! We live ten doors down the road from the nursery, on the same side. The park, where lots of dogs walk is two minutes away. I am well aware that not all small children like dogs, and the dog was quiet, under control and walking by the kerb - not by the gates to the nursery. Aaargh!

And DS2 is still upset because he counts 'bloody' as swearing so thinks we have been sworn at. Not quite sure what this stupid woman thinks we should have done!

What a load of nonsense. It's a public street, you weren't doing anything wrong. She is the one who did not have her toddler under control.

I think ds2 is right in a way, the woman was behaving agressively towards you.

ditavonteesed · 24/02/2012 10:38

in future you respond ' I am testing him to see if he is any good with small children, he ate 3 but we have been watchign a training program on the telly and want to see if he will still do it' ok.

oreocrumbs · 24/02/2012 10:44

Tell her next time its not the dog she wants to worry about its the DC - they are far more likely to bite. Thats what I say. Grin

Just ignore her, shes an idiot. She got a shock when her LO bolted and thought she would make it your fault Hmm. I'm sure if you didn't have a dog, then it would have been because you distracted her with your bag or something else.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 10:49

Stupid woman should have had her own child under as good control as you had your dog.

Ignore, you've a perfect right to walk a dog under control past a nursery.
If she has another go, 'I'm walking my dog, under control. If your child is under control too then there's no problem is there? Smile'

ChickensHaveNoLips · 24/02/2012 11:00

Ignore her. You were on a public path with your dog under control and on a lead. You did nothing wrong.

thebestisyettocome · 24/02/2012 11:05

She is nuts.

bellabelly · 24/02/2012 11:08

I wish there was a "like" button for Dita's post! Grin

IAmBooyhoo · 24/02/2012 11:09

i'm afraid i think i might have laughed if she had come out with that shite to me in your situation. in fact i'm almost certain i would.

Ephiny · 24/02/2012 11:09

She's an idiot, she should have had her kid under control. You were doing nothing wrong or out of the ordinary at all.

She sounds a bit deranged, shouting and swearing at random strangers in the street like that (no it's not the worst 'swearing' obviously, but still not a nice thing to shout at someone, especially in front of small children).

wouldn't it be nice is she was a fellow MNer and she came on and said ' god, sorry I was in a terrible mood, behaved like an arse and I can't apologise enough.

She does sound like someone hit her with the bad mood stick.

GrimmaTheNome · 24/02/2012 11:30

If 'bloody' is said aggressively, it is swearing. Its all in the tone, you know.

singinggirl · 24/02/2012 11:38

Thank you all! Yes, I know that 'bloody' is swearing when said that way, it came out wrong! I really was coming from it that DS2 is still a very innocent 8 and somehow hasn't picked up words much stronger than this yet. Not sure how, because DS1 certainly knows some choice swear words! dita, I think I may try and memorise your post to use if there is a next time Grin. Why can I never think of those at the time?

I'd get all my dog walking friends to meet up monday morning and all walk past her at the same time !!!

PandaWatch · 24/02/2012 16:54

Grin at SP0104!

We should organise a Doghouse rally!

There's so many oddballs about OP. Don't give her a second thought.

ditavonteesed · 24/02/2012 17:03

I would never dare actually say anything like that, but its nice to dream. dont give her another thought, I have never come across so m,any horrible people as since I got dogs. definatly up for a rally though.

PandaWatch · 24/02/2012 17:40

The People With Dogs Against People Against Dogs and People With Dogs Rally!

PandaWatch · 24/02/2012 17:42

People without dogs and dogs without people who are also against people against dogs and people with dogs also welcome!

FruitShootsAreALittleHorrit · 24/02/2012 18:02

With hindsight maybe you could have glared at her and said "shhhhh you're distracting him from his work, he's training to sniff out aggressive people who swear unnecessarily...oh he has done well today!"

Avantia · 24/02/2012 18:49

Oh I'd love to walk passed that nursery too ! Can I join ? My lab loves children .. but never eaten a whole one yet .

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 24/02/2012 19:00

'Hmm now let me think, was it your child or my dog running wild?'
