Fractured wrist - dog walking dilemma

My big question is, does anyone know of a lead system that can be attached one handed? When it snowed 2 weeks ago, I slipped taking my dog out for her ablusions and fractured my wrist.

I was in hospital a couple of days, have had a pin and plate put in my wrist and have had a cast on for 2 weeks. I've now been given a smaller splint for the next 4 weeks. Muscles are wasted in my right hand and I'm struggling to do much at mo. So how do I get back to taking my turn with pup walking?

Poor DH has had to be here to attach lead and I usually need a spare body to pick up poop for me. The poop thing I'm sure I can crack one-handed, but the lead thing is baffling me! And poor DH needs to get back on the road with his job again....Help?

OOh. looks good. Do you just attach the normal lead to the belt with the climbing type hook?

A slip lead will do the job at minimal cost.

Yep, just use a carabiner and clip on as many dogs as you think you can take! Grin The huskies wear harnesses and bungee leads but in the circumstance you describe a plain lead would be fine. Just means you have a hand free for scooping.

Thanks. We're just checking out the alternatives...it's only for 4 weeks so we want to keep the expense down. I do like the look of the belly belt thoguh :)

Toboldlygo, I like all the colour options on your friend's website.

Flapper, hope you get well soon.

Thanks redwing. I've managed to rig up a temporary solution using a strip of superstrength velcro they gave me for suspending my arm. It held my 16 stone dh in place whilst he tried to drag me into the kitchen (I think he was hoping to get me sorting the washing up :)) so I figured it'd hold my cavapoo insitu. She's been so good, bless her. She's only a pup still but she seems to have grown up these last couple of weeks.

That sounds like a good DIY solution. I'm impressed!

A broken wrist will take months, not 4 weeks to become functional again, sorry. I was in your position last year! Wrists are rolling joints, and when the cast comes off it will be fused and immobile laterally. You won't be able to turn your hand palm up or down. Physio will get it back, but not quickly.

But back to the dog lead thing - I used a rope slip lead. V cheap and easy to put on one handed. If you haven't used one before ask a trainer to show you.

Hiyah noninspitation. I only need one hand free to pick up poo....I'm not expecting miracles from the wrist after 4 weeks. I'm in my 3rd week now since the break, 1st week in a splint and I feel like crying most days cos I'm in pain still. I started lifting small things with my hand yesterday and flexing my fingers so the range of motion can increase only to be met with post gym type stiffness in my hand and an urge to crawl back into bed and take painkillers all day :) I'm off to google slip roap leads and to have a nice warm bath. Thanks for the info. I'd pick your brains more about recovery but I think ignorance is bliss for me at the mo...might change my mind and post in health threads later.

Good luck Flapper. Don't worry, you'll be fine. 3 weeks was my low point too, but rest assured from here on in it does get better. My consultant was a bit rubbish and did not warn me what to expect when the cast came off, so I thought I'd warn you! Ask for a referral to a good sports injury physio. I have 80% movement back within a year, but was driving, mowing the lawn etc much earlier.

Thanks noninspiration . I do seem to have hit a bitof a low today...tearful, don't want to acknowledge that it's there and it will be immobile for many weeks to come. Knowing I should be thinking about going back to work, but currently not managing to get my behind out of bed most mornings. It's goog to know it's normal.
