neighbours dog hurls itself against fence barking very aggressively

My next door neighbour has what I think is a puggle , part beagle and in the summer they keep their back door open all the time except when it gets dark and their dog comes out whenever it hears me doing gardening and chucks itself against the fence barking aggressively. Sometimes this happens several times a day. Whenever I do gardening, take the rubbish out, go to the compost heap. Sometimes their dog is doing this whilst I am just inches from the fence. They call it back after 5 minutes but it is still upsetting. I have had prolonged discussions with them and they think 'that dogs bark, get over it' Even though I have explained how upsetting and frightening it is. Do you think it is possible to train a dog not to do this and how should they do it. Do you as dog owners think that it is ok for a dog to behave like this. How do you think the best way of sorting this matter out is. It has gone on for 2 years now. They call their dog back with a dog whistle and never ever reprimand it.

Yes you can train dogs not to do this, although it is fairly common behaviour (boundary guarding) and unlikely that their dog would ever actually cause you any harm, even if it did break the fence, not that makes it okay.

As a dog owner I would be mortified if my dogs were scaring my neighbours (providing my neighbours were not unreasonable, which you don't appear to be).

I have no idea how to train this as fortunately it is one problem we have never had to face with Devil Dog Shock, although that is probably most likely to do with the fact that we only have about 6inches worth of boundary were it is possible for anyone to walk past Hmm

Someone will be along with training advise soon but if your neighbours won't listen you are well within reason to call your local dog warden.

Easy to train the dog - everytime you go out into the garden shout "treats" in a cheery voice and throw treats over the fence, the dog will snuffle about for the treats and stop barking at you. even if he does not eat the treats immediately and continue barking over time you just shouting treats will be enough to distract him from his barking.

However a word of warning many people do not like other people feeding their dogs so not sure what the owner will think of this.

I'm really interested in this thread as we live next door to three crazy Corgi's who bark incessantly when they're in the garden. It's not unusual for them to wake me up at 6:30am and keep me awake at midnight and every time we're in the garden at the same time as them we have to listen to their noise.

Although our two dogs don't bark we've put a veggie patch the entire length of the boundary so that the two sets of dogs can't wind each other up through the hedge/fence, and we've put up some wooden fencing and double thickness visibility barrier netting at the bottom of the remaining hedge to try and help the situation but these animals are driving me bonkers. In the summer we can't have 5 mins peace in our garden if the Corgi's are out. We're planning to fence the rest of the boundary later this year - when we've saved up the £1000 it's going to cost!

After reading up about the breed I understand that they have a barking disposition, so I'm trying to be understanding but I've heard the owners encouraging excited barking behaviour during games etc. They have tried to tackle the problem with a shaker - no difference (no surprise given that they encourage/reward barking in games & then tell them off). In desperation we tried the noise repellent gun thing last summer, and there was a small improvement but we couldn't be consistent enough with it because we're not always in the garden when they are so it certainly didn't solve the problem.

I am getting to the point where I HATE these three dogs - and I generally love all dogs regardless of how smelly, ugly, naughty they are. I really am starting to understand the stress of living next door to excessive noise. So - if there are any great tips for over the hedge training that we could try I'd bloody love to hear them!

That is really miserable to live next door to such selfish people.
Puggles have a disposition to track people on the other side of the fence.
When I walk down the length of my garden and my garden isnt very wide, I can hear their dog running behind me barking. Its horrible.

You could buy an ultrasound dog repeller/ dog trainer. Apparently if you sound that when they bark they will get the message and stop. It is irritating but not harmful to them.

What's a puggle?
