We have come away for the weekend to a cottage miles from civilization. Our 17 week old cocker spanil keep whimpering and his body is shaking..He was fine all day till now, he has eaten as usual.
The only thing l can think of is that he is teething but he is quite distressed although he has just fallen asleep.
Any ideas????

Ghosts? Unless he has eaten something outside? A teething dog does not whimper xx

Onlyaphase · 11/02/2012 20:09

Might he just be really overtired from the trip and the new cottage - he is very young?

Doha · 11/02/2012 20:13

He ate earlier some processed chicken that fell out the fridge when l opened it earlier..would that do it?
I am so scared for him l am thinking of going home now.

If you are insured you will probably have a veterinary helpline. Is there anything unusual your pup has eaten or drunk? Be very aware of letting your pup drink from puddles as they could have antifreeze in them (although not all that likely). If he is eating and drinking normally it should be a good sign. You could check his gums. They should be pink and when you press them they go a bit paler then back to their original colour. Is he dreaming? Dogs can make funny whimpering noises and shake and jerk when they are dreaming.

Could be the processed chicken. My spaniel cross had a very sensitive tummy up to the age of one. Has he had a poo recently?

I, too would get a local vet number.

Doha · 11/02/2012 20:22

Puddles --yes he has been drinking a wee bit from them (have tried to stop him).
He is asleep and quiet now if he starts again l will find a local vet.

Thanks everyone, this is just so stressful l want to cry.

My mum's cocker did this when he was about 18 weeks old. He had caught kennel cough. Get him checked out.

MrsJasonBourne · 11/02/2012 20:30

He wasn't having some sort of fit was he? My cocker spaniel is prone to fits if he's particularly overtired and excited. Once they're over he's fine but it's a bit scary at the time.

Doha · 11/02/2012 20:34

Don't think it was a fit. He just kept whimpering and his wee body was shaking, l just wrapped him in a blanket and held him till he fell asleep. He is still quiet and asleep.
He does have mad periods generally when he is overtired but l think that is normal isn't it?

I take it he's not shaking in his sleep? Is it possible that it was fear or overexcitement because of being in a new place? One of mine shakes when he sees the plastic cone because he hates wearing it.

daisydotandgertie · 11/02/2012 20:56

Try not to worry too much.

He might just be overtired and overdone.

Keep him warm and let him sleep. Keep an eye open for vomiting, drooling, a bum in the air front paws out long stretch, really fast breathing and a very fast pulse.

Take him up to your bedroom tonight; don't leave him downstairs on his own.

Do you want one of us to google a vets number for you? Is your Internet connection good enough to do it?

Puddle water is really unlikely to have anti freeze in it if you're in the middle of nowhere, so try not to dwell on that too much.

Have you checked over his limbs and body for cuts, swelling etc. It's worth checking he hasn't any localised pain. One of our pups broke a toe at about the same age and reacted in a similar way.

Doha · 11/02/2012 20:57

Husband currently on his knees asking the pup how he is feeling Hmm while rubbing his tummy.
He is awake and seems ok so far !!!!

hope he is ok this morning. Smile

Doha · 12/02/2012 15:38

Sorry has poor internet connection late last night and earlier today.

We had a very unsettled night last night, he wasn't whimpering/shaking but he wouldn't settle at all. As a result l slept on a couch with him in my arms ( DH started to get chest discomfort l believe through tiredness and stress).
This morning he is fine Smile however me and DH are knackered Sad.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and support last night, think l am better with babies than puppies....
