Barking

Our 12 month old golden retriever is in trouble with the neighbours for barking. We live on a rural property and she is used to peace and quiet, and barks if she sees or hears anyone (not at cars, but voices from the odd cyclist or neighbour). Then the dog in another neighbouring property starts barking and it can get a bit annoying.

Anyway, next door neighbours called yesterday to say that the barking was driving them mad. I brought her inside so she stopped but it's not really the answer. What is the best way to deal with this? At puppy training, the advice was to praise her when she was quiet but I don't see how this can work with a dog. If I say No! in a big deep voice then she looks at me and stops temporarily. Do I just keep going like this?

Funnily enough, if I am out and she is in the house on her own when someone comes to the house, she keeps very quiet - it wouldn't do for anyone to know she was in the house on her own!!

You can get some sort of collar that is supposed to stop them barking, think it gives them a small shock though which seems a bit mean. I have no experience of them, but maybe you could look it up?

Please DO NOT use a shock collar - they are evil and cruel.

When ours bark we call them straight in. It takes a bit of time, but eventually the dog realises that barking means they have to come in, they will still bark with sufficient provocation - but most of the general barking is reduced.

Good luck

Thank you! Barking hasn't been too bad if I'm on it with the 'NO!' and bringing her away from the fence. I'd rather not have to keep her in as it's summer here and the doors are open, but keeping her close to the house does help.

Shutup - I live in NZ and shock collars are used for combatting unwanted behaviour - in certain areas it is compulsory to have your dog 'kiwi trained' to stop it killing kiwis and other native birds, and that involves shock collars. So whilst I haven't used one, it is certainly something that is used here, and is supposedly quite effective.
