Any tips on bed chewing?

Our Puppy is now 6 months old.

Up until last week she had never shown an interest in chewing her own bed. When she is in her bed she has some toys including kongs and tug a jug and bones to keep her occupied she pretty much just sleep because she is a lazy bugger but last week we noticed she'd started chewing the zip on her bed.

When we caught her doing it I told her no and took it away for a minute or so and then gave it back. This work for a day or two and then she didnt really care much as we would give it back eventually.

We've tried putting more tasty treats in her kongs etc because surely a dog would rather tasty treats than a bed???? No, she still eats the bed.

Well today she has totally ripped the whole thing into teeny tiny pieces.

DH is pissed off, she wanted to buy her a plastic bed because he thinks we'll end up buying a new soft bed every other day.

Puppy thinks she's a bit of a princess and I know if we tell her to sleep in a cold hard plastic bed she will be having none of it!

I dont know what to do to stop her though?

Personally I wouldn't bother with a bed at all till this phase has stopped, just some vet bed for another 6 months or so but then I don't give my dogs a chance to destroy nice things coz I'm horrid and won't buy them decent kit till they're older.

I promise your dog won't stop loving you, won't get cold and you'll stop any arguments with DH who is right about the waste of money.

Ours doesn't have a bed because of this problem. She even chews vet bed. So she sleeps on the floor!

She's 11-12 months old by the way. Not sure if/when she will grow out of it as she loves to chew soft things such as soft toys, clothes and towels!

We went to fabric warehouse, bought 2m of cheap fleece, cut into sections, put in crate with dog at night. In the day he likes to drag it round like he's a lion with his kill!!! and in the evening he chews/sucks on it as a comfort blanket - smells of him - and if it gets soiled, we have 4 others and they go in the washing machine. Young dog - think cheap!

After he chewed his way through three beds, I bought my dog one of those horried big plastic beds. He also had a really tough mattressy thing in it.

Your puppy will grow out of it. Don't waste any more money.

until recently ralph just had blankets to sleep on. now he has a big pillow and hasnt destroyed it.

we tried a plastic bed but he knawed the edges of it, so gave up. but they are cheap. he had that for a while with blankets in it but once he chewed the edges too much we got rid of it.

I feel better that she isnt the only one, sorry!

Our older Dog didnt chew at all really. It just puzzles me that she'd rather chew the bed than a bone but hey ho, she like to eat her own poo too so I guess I'll never understand.

Thanks for the advice. I've told my DH about the Vet Bed. We would give her blankets but I dont think that would be any good as if she can reach our towels or tea towels in the kitchen she'll chew them so I think if we gave her blakents she'd destroy them pretty quickly.

DH has said if she chews the vet bed she'll have to sleep on the floor until she is older but the dogs sleep in the kitchen which is tiled. Doubt it would be very comfortable. I may be projecting though.
