Composting dog poo

So, I'm thinking of making a dog poo composter in the garden. So far, the internet tells me that I need to dig a reasonably big hole in the garden and cover it with a plastic lid. The poo gets put in the hole along with a bit of dirt. Every now and then, it can be helpful to put some septic tank chemicals in there to help with the breakdown. I'm then told it is completely safe to use on the lawn and ornamental plants- just don't use it on veggies.

Is anyone around who can give me a sanity check on this? Do I have my facts straight? Any hints from people who have done this before/ already doing it?

Thanks!

I've heard same things for cat poo; the weird thing is, I cannot for life of me find out exactly what bacteria are supposed to be in the pet poo that would survive composting and cooking & still be harmful & not be something most pet owners already get hefty doses of.

I can understand being careful about what you fertilise salad veg with.

We had one of these.
It overflowed
We then made a huge one with an old plastic dustbin sunk in the ground
It overflowed!

We obviously have too much dog poo for them to cope in our case!
You need to do the treatment bit, adding the chemicals regularly or it doesn't break down quickly enough and then will be too full to work.

Well, she does most of her poos in the woods nearby, so its for the odd one she does at home maybe 4 or 5 a week?. I think it just has to be better than putting it in a plastic bag and putting it in the landfill/ incinerator.

I've found this on Amazon. It comes with a year's supply of the chemicals. It has to be worth a go for £15.

I shall report back on the overflow situation!

Friend had one. Was rubbish. Oky maybe if you have one very small dog and very well draining ground.

We had one years ago it stank in summer, filled with water with floating turds in winter..
