AGGHHHH!

I was bitten by a dog today...

Was walking BigPup and my DMs dogs today along with my DD.

On the way round, we met a lovely Cav pup- all dogs playing nicely, chasing balls, bouncing on each others heads, as they do. Out of nowhere came a little sod terrier x of some sort, ran over, snapping and snarling, proper teeth showing frothy mouth type behaviour. DMs dogs got out of the way sharpish (one an old boy who can't be arsed doing much and the other a whippet who does everything sharpish...) That left my pup and the little Cav, being tormented by this terrier. My pup ran off at 1st, coming back to heel when I called him, BUT THE FUCKER WOULDNT FUCK THE FUCK OFF! I told my pup, OK, go, as he was backing up against me and looking around ( I dont know, presume for an escape route?). By now, the terrier had this little Cav pinned to the ground, stood above growlong and grabbing it's neck. The cavs poor owner on verge of tears. I stepped over and shouted NO! OFF! OFF! SOD OFF! The terrier went on his back in front of me, so I turned away and walked off, called my pup, DMs dogs, put their leads on. Got maybe 5 paces away when it flew up behind me and jumped for my sleeve, (it's ripped my jacket but not my skin.) My pup and DMs whippet went into full on guard mode, growling, teeth out, hackles up in front of me. Whippet dog has never growled in 12 years and doesn't seem that bothered about her 'people' bar my dad and DP, the tart.

Anyway, this little terriers owner did manage to get it back, by standing on the path 200yards away shouting! Helpful whilst I'm under attack by your effing dog, ta love.

As we walked back home I called over, "could've done with a hand there" to her, she made some sort of shrugging gesture and said it was too muddy for her buggy (WTF?!!)

Oh god I've mega ranted but was just so shaken up as had 2yoDD with me, she was out of her pushchair as she likes to throw the tennis ball about 3 inches. Thankfully, she's a tough little lunatic and doesn't seem to be traumatised.

All dogs (including little Cav who now seems to be my pups best pal!) played really nicely afterwards, including with a GSD they met later- so I'm hoping not much harm done. cavs owner checked and her dog seemed ok, this wasn't far from vets so think she was going to pop him in for a check over.

I'm just so bloody annoyed, I know it's the owners fault and shouldnt be horrid about the dog, but it's really taken a great big fucking chunk out of my coat- least it wasn't my arm, I suppose.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

I posted a thread yesterday about my dog (shih tzu) who was on lead being set upon by an offlead out of control great dane. Could have really done damage to both me and dog if the owner hadn't managed to grab it and get my dog from its mouth! I was so shaken, it was awful.

I get so pissed off by people having their dogs offlead and allowing them to wander over to my dog and now I am really anxious about meeting off-lead dogs - thankfully my dog is fine and wants to befriend everyone - but no doubt my dog would be labelled aggressive if my dog took exception to being approached by an off-lead dog!!

Sorry to hear that Piggy, hope your dog is ok.

What did the owner do? Probably just walk off I imagine. Did you report it to the dog warden? Dog-on-dog is bad enough but to take a chunk out of you is on another level - especially with kids playing around.
I reported my incident even though I didn't have names/addresses etc. Made me feel a bit better about it.

No, I think the title should have read 'knobhead'. Which is what the terrier's owner was - letting her dog attack another dog and not intervening, not apologising properly, not offering to pay for the damage to your coat.

Glad it wasn't your arm, and that the other dogs are OK - if you hadn't intervened the poor little Cav might not have been, so be proud of yourself!

Tell me about it! Our neighbour's dog is a nightmare, she doesn't put it on a lead and when it rushes up to you barking and snapping it pays no attention to her at all. When you ask her to keep it away/under control she instantly becomes confrontational, and is really shouty.

Last week it rolled my dog over and had her by the throat then lunged at me when I intervened with my boot. The response? It doesn't need to be on the lead, and it's not aggressive....WTF - it is only a matter of time before it does serious damage and she seems to have no idea how to control it. The police have become involved via another incident with a neighbour but won't take it further unless it bites a person rather than another dog.

It's a rural area, we all have dogs and are lucky enough to be able to walk them in the fields but she's hellbent on ruining it for everyone.

Not to provoke anyone....but perhaps the other dogs are just running over to play? I can't imagine a Great Dane attacking a little dog...of course could be wrong, wasn't there...but I have quite a big young playful dog, and I find people with little dogs often think their dogs are being attacked when really the other dogs are coming to play. I take my dog to a puppy romp each week, a load of dogs in a field, and it can look quite violent at times when they are playing, but I know how to recognise the signs of aggression...and have rarely come across real aggression in other dogs when I am out, it's not very common.

8oreighty · 06/02/2012 12:07

of course biting a chunk out of your coat is awful, not on, and I would be furious about that, wasn't really replying to original OP just generally commenting about dogs off lead...

Inthepotty · 06/02/2012 20:11

I've really looked into whether it's play or not 8. This dog really was heading for the belly type thing. IMO, alot of owners think "oh its playing" when really their dog/other dog is uncomfortable with the situation. I have a large breed dog, (well, pup) that's why I'm careful- ie I ask other owners if their dog will mind playing. I do think there is also "appropriate play", ie my freind has 50kilo ridgeback who she puts on lead/avoid small dogs, not because hes aggressive, but the roll around bounce about play he indulges in with his big dog pals would be dangerous to a smaller dog.

Yes I agree about knowing when it's appropriate. I also put my dog on a lead around smaller dogs or dogs who don't want tonne hassled by mine but once in a while even though I am pretty vigilant she will see a dog in the distance and run off to play. It's because she is still young and I hate it, it's embarrassing i apologise like mad...but I can't keep her on the lead All the time, just in case...and she has never hurt another dog.

Inthepotty · 06/02/2012 22:58

Sorry really didn't mean that to sound/come across snappy! Its a tricky one, I do think "dogs off lead, fair game, my dog can approach," and so far I've not had much bother, really. it just seems a few owners ive met think my dog won't mind being jumped all over when he's on lead, (he doesnt mind, so far!) or "they only want to play" when they're clearly not just playing! I always ask, too, but that's just because my pup is only 6 months but a big bugger and sometimes I worry he'll bother other dogs. I'm really sympathetic with owners who are TRYING to recall when their dogs are busy having a sniff, but hate the ones who wander off, not thinking it might be putting me and my dog in an awkward situ.

You are right though if your dog is on lead then the other dog should know not to approach or if not be put on a lead. Those are the rules I follow. But have learned loads from the guy that runs the puppy romp and obedience classes. He doesn't like them even meeting up close on lead as they need to learn not to play with another dog ona lead. But sooo many people don't seem to know/care about it all...I was only commenting because hear so many people say their dog was attacked or another dog is agressive when I see quite clearly they are just young and boisterous rather than aggressive. That's all wanted to say!!
