sorry i know this question is a bit like how long is a piece of string but i am trying to work out how much it would cost approx for us to have a small dog per year - and everyone i've spoken to recommends insurance. but it's hard finding this out before you have the dog to get the quote! i've read that people recommend lifetime insurance?? any help would be much appreciated...thank you

We have lifelong cover for our 5 month old Labrador and we pay £20 with Argos, if you have an idea of what sort of dog you are looking for try putting the details in compare the market so you can get a rough idea. We were 90% sure we were getting a lab when we first started looking so that's what we did

thanks louby that is really helpful i will have a look on compare the market and pick some small dog types to get an idea.

Think we are about £120 per year with John Lewis / Greenbee

If you look on the kennel club website, I think we were given the leaflet at training, but I think it says for absolutely everything expect to pay around £25 a week for your dog. Hope that helps a bit

Thanks everyone. That is all really helpful

I pay £7.92 per month with Liverpool Victoria. They settled arecent claim of almost £500 direct with the vet. I have an 18mth old collie crossSmile

I pay £15.00 per month for our lab. Premiums started at £20.00 per month when he was a pup and went down once he was neutered. It is a for life policy with Axa. I found them very quick to pay (they paid vet directly) when we had to claim after only having the policy for 2 months when our stupid pup ate a large stone (£800).

We pay just under £20 for our labrador. Yes, make sure you get lifetime cover otherwise if they develop something that will need ongoing treatment, it'll only be covered for 1 year.

be prepared for the price to rise significantly as the dog gets older. I used to insure 3 young dogs for £13 per month (for all 3) that was 9 years ago. Now £65 per month. That is not an all singing all dacing policy either. Straightforward Essentials policy with Direct Line.

I'd avoid Argos/Homebase/Tesco now.
They've just changed underwriters and wanted to put my Staffy's premium up to £27 a month from £17.

I'm with Axa now. £15 for the Staffy and £17 for the Doodle on a lifetime policy.
I've also noticed that a lot of companies are not doing Lifetime policies anymore.

There are also some insurance companies which have stopped doing pet insurance altogether. Not making any money so they say.

I pay about £600/year for 3 dogs, including 2 oldies (11 & 12+) and a 2 yr old. The oldies are with Tesco and the youngster is LV.
