How do you tackle the hair?! <spits hair from mouth>

Jasper just seems to have started shedding. Not tons, but a bit. I brush him a few times a week with a bristle/pin brush, but it doesn't seem to capture the hair iyswim. I hoover daily, but my dyson is shite. We have wooden floors, so I can mop it up. But how do you tackle the flying fur issue?

MrsZoidberg · 25/01/2012 17:17

Ah, but GSDs only shed once a year .............. it just lasts 365 days Grin

In our house dog hair is a condiment Hmm

or

In our House dog hair is an accessory Grin

It's one of the many reasons we love the shaggy monsters!

The back end of cylinder hoovers will blow the hair into the air. This was a revelation to me, I couldn't understand why floor was covered again just a few hours after cleaning, even when dog hadn't been in the room, and we were finding a covering of hairs on high shelves and on top of the cooker.
Then one day sun was shining through patio doors and really showed up the hair floating about and I realised the back of the machine was blowing it off the floor and up, it was so fine it drifted about for ages. So now I make sure the blowy end isn't pointing towards the bits I haven't done yet and its made a big difference.

Not much you can do about the airborne hair IME. Frequent brushing and hoovering should help, but doesn't stop it all. Brush outdoors if you can.

wildfig · 25/01/2012 18:28

I hoover every day. I'm actively saving up for oak flooring. I've abandoned any hope of wearing black clothing in the house. I don't let the dogs upstairs so I have one area of the house that isn't slowly matting up with white hair.

And every so often I pack them off to the dog sitter so I can do some cleaning then sit and enjoy the cleanness for one afternoon before they come back.

I have a Dyson Animal (upright) and it is brilliant at removing my 2 GSDs dog hair. Yes - although they shed every day they still have a 'heavy moult' twice a year too.

At the moment I am pulling tufts out of pupstar, she is moulting terribly, she is coming into season soon and I know her Mum does that so maybe its an inherited thing. Hmm

I use a wire slicker and a stripper to remove undercoat. Every day, it helps a lot, but I still get 'hair bunnies'

TwoIfBySea · 25/01/2012 18:47

We have laminate flooring and I still hoover every day.

Because of the weather this winter our poor lab retriever has shed his winter coat only for it to grow back when frosty and then shed when it gets milder!

I've got a wire slicker but there is something else I'd like to get, can never remember what it is called though. Maybe it is the stripper like Jax has?

At some point I will start saving the hair and knit myself another dog. Seriously there are bags full!

ChickensGoMeh · 25/01/2012 19:36

It's incredible how much hair he can lose and yet not shrink. He is defying the laws of physics. Or slowly cloning himself in jigsaw form.

furminator

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 25/01/2012 19:43

Oh lord yes the hair gets everywhere! I brush dog, Hoover daily, mop twice a week and it really is nonstop. No solutions, just empathy [bgrin]

TwoIfBySea · 25/01/2012 19:57

Furminator - that's it! Thanks, bit expensive though but who'd recommend?

Coca · 25/01/2012 20:05

We have a GSD/MAL X who sheds hair like crazy. I hoover at least once a day and it still gets everywhere. I have learnt to live with it or I would go loopy! The worst is DH's black socks when he crosses the living room.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 26/01/2012 07:51

two furminator, and it is great, still use large wire slicker thingy - you can get them on ebay/amazon, cheaper than in pet shops. Do check it is not a 'copy' though.

Yes, how can they continually shed and not get smaller? Coz new bloody fur is growing as we remove the old stuff. I am sure it is a secret ploy between hoover manufacturers and floor mop people. Grin

NoGoodAtHousework · 26/01/2012 08:12

I got my furminator on eBay for a third of retail price. Shame my GSD didn't like it all that much. However, it did work really well!

misslala1987 · 26/01/2012 11:16

furminator??? im looking it up!

louby86 · 26/01/2012 12:15

Glad to see some good feedback for furminators, might have to get one later when we stock up on treats

daisydotandgertie · 26/01/2012 14:35

Furminator here too. It's fabulous - I do each of them every week or two (4 labs) and it has made a massive difference to how much hair they leave lying around.

readyveg · 26/01/2012 15:43

Fulminator here too, those waxed brooms are good at scooping hair too.

Does anyone's dog not like the slickers? Mine won't tolerate one at all - it does feel kind of sharp to me, so I'm not surprised. I can only use a traditional wooden brush on her and she's getting mats in her fur :(
