I use a home boarder, but not near you sorry :( I chose her because she wanted to meet Jasper before we agreed the booking, so I got to look at her place and ask lots of questions. I pay £20 a day, and have to provide food. It is expensive, but I have total peace of mind.

I asked at my vets, and I asked people locally who I knew had dogs - where did they go and what did they like about it - then visited.

Recommendations .

Then a visit .

Once you have a shortlist, bear in mind that both boarding kennels and home boarders are licensed by the Council. Licences are issued annually and should be displayed prominently when you visit. Check beforehand with your Council that they are licensed and you also have the right under FOI to see all inspection reports. In fact, suggest to kennel if they don't already do so that they place inspection reports on website. This is no substitute for recommendations etc but can help greatly and at least makes sure that things like fire safety are properly covered.

If you have a particular breed of dog it may also be worth asking around at breed club, breed rescue etc. We use a lovely kennels that are also used by the greyhound charity where we got our dogs from so know that they are very knowledgeable about pointies which is very reassuring on the few occasions we go away. Ours offer a free "awayday" of boarding for your dog before you go to let them (and you!) accustom themselves, and are happy to take guests rounds and show them the facilities/premises - in fact, are very proud to do so, which is always a good sign too.
