Same as you Smile

He's terrified of the hairbrush, which shows how infrequently we use it!

Also short coat, lab x, and I do wipe him with a damp duster quite often to get bits of mud off - but he really does seem teflon-coated when it comes to dirt.

About three times a week for the fluffy, cotton wool haired terrier. Never for the hounds, but I do sometimes rub them with a damp cloth and none rinse dog shampoo if they are stinky. DH has recently announced that I should let them get in the shower with me in it too Hmm. They look at me with death stares if it is raining, methinks a shower would go down like a lead balloon.

I brush all of mine daily. It gives me the chance to check them over generally as well, check for ticks or any other issues. Good also for them to be used to being handled.

Great for trick training as well. If I say 1 my dogs will lift their front left foot, 2 they will lift their front right, 3 will lift their back left, 4 will lift their back right foot.
Show my you teeth the collies will lift their lips in a snarl, labs and stafficross just try to grin!
Eyes they will put their face on my hand for me to look in their eyes, ears the tilt their heads to the side etc. Too good a training opportunity to miss.

If you dog does hate the brush put the brush by his food bowl for a week when he is fed. Daily brush him down with your hand. Then air brush him (not literally) just brush him with the brush but have it above him so it does not come in contact with him for a bit, when he is used to that air brush him but touch him with your hand - then very gently brush him with the brush but the smooth side until he is happy to be brushed gently.

If your dogs hate contact it can make vet visits hard I even use toy stethoscopes etc on my guys so they are used to it and use the ear thingy to look in their ears. I need to get a life Smile

Our dogs don't like being brushed. I'll try your tips Minimuu. Why do dogs not like being brushed? Does it tickle them? Or can it hurt?

Catsmamma · 22/01/2012 14:11

Grin love the paws, teeth, eyes and ears routine - and very impressed at both trainer and dogs.

Mouse loves actually being brushed, he's just anxious when he sees the brush - iyswim. He used to be anxious about the cloth too (just unknown, I think) but isn't any more, he rolls over for it (frequently muddy belly). Will put brush by bowl, and when he starts playing with it will remove and consider job done Smile

Avantia thanks for posting that link, it never occurred to me to brush the fur the wrong way Blush I'm more used to cats (first dog) and they hate their fur being brushed backwards. My lab gets brushed once a week but I never seem to get much fur out despite him shedding continuously. Just brushed him properly as per the article and got loads out, also he seemed to really enjoy it, laid down and relaxed instead of having to be bribed to keep still.

I brush my cavaliers every single day and spend about half hour on each one. They go the the groomer every three months for their feet to be trimmed and a tidy up which she just cuts a small amount off the skirt and trims under their tails. I would never allow them to be shaved I like mine to look like the breed they are and hate to see them with it clipped close to thier skins.

ChickensGoMeh · 22/01/2012 18:01

A couple of times a week, mainly to brush out the mud.

Avantia · 22/01/2012 18:55

My lab doesn't like being brushed - but a biscuit works wonders - she is extremely good at the vets because she knows that she will be given a treat by the vet at the end , even with all her eye ops she will sit still whilst examined .

I did brush her today hence the thought of the tread - her coat did look even more glossy when done .

Daily in the summer; when I remember/when they're looking particularly scruffy in the winter, which is generally a couple of times a week. Our springer always looks as if she's been dragged through a hedge backwards though, and she can be full of knots and greenery within about ten minutes of a full groom, so it's a bit disheartening! Our hairy lurcher has a teflon coat that never tangles and looks exactly the same after I've got a carrier-bag's worth of fur off him with a furminator.

I do our hound every day with one of those rubbery massage sort of brushes. It looks like the sort of thing you'd do a horse with. He LOVES it. He goes all slitty eyed and leans right into you. He also loves the shower.

Not so keen on ear cleaning or face/eye wiping or teeth brushing though.

I'm a bit Confused as to whether or not he's actually a dog.
