Dog waking early hours :(

We have an 18 month old Lab who sleeps in a crate at night and is happy to be in there. She only goes in there at night and when we get up and start turning tv, lights off etc, she gets up and tootles off into her crate. The room is completley dark at night.

She usually starts nodding off on the sofa about 9pm but will only doze and if one of us goes into the kitchen, she will follow, maybe go out in the garden for a wee and then come back in and doze again.

The problem is that she is consistantly waking up and barking between 4.30 and 6 each morning, which means one of us has to get up (usually me) to let her out of her crate, she then goes for a wee and ususally a poo in the garden then comes back in and goes back to sleep until about 730/8am in the living room.

Im exhausetd with this early morning waking ( i work FT shifts) and wondered if the time she is fed is related to her waking time, ie does it usually
take XX amount of hours for her food to pass through her system resulting in her waking up to toilet.

She is fed at 8am and 5pm with access to water all day/eve and is usually walked off lead for an hour a day, so lots of running about.

Is something disturbing her? Foxes, maybe?

If you think thats possible, try putting the radio on softly. Do you cover her crate?

Otherwise, it sounds like a habit to me - you could try feeding her second meal at 3.30pm and see if it helps?

My 9 month old has two 1 hour walks per day, which is a lot I know, so sleeps like a log when undisturbed, thankfully!

Shes in the playroom downstaira which has has been converted so no windows and therefore nothing outside to disturb her. Also its totally dark so I dont bother to cover it, but when she had a smaller crate in the kitchen i did cover it to keep out morning light, but still, same thing!

How do I break this habit?
Cant do a late night walk every night either as i work shifts so DH couldnt leave kids alone to walk her on eve/nights im not here.

Our dog went through a phase of this, but we nipped it in the bud by (a) ignoring it completely and (b) playing soft music in the room she slept in at night.

The fact you have been going down to let her out of the crate has only reinforced it - and even though she does go out for a wee and a poo, she COULD hold it in longer if you left her. I think a few painful nights are in order when you completely ignore her and eventually it will stop :)
