Raw Diet

After deciding to make the brave descision to move pup to a raw diet, I can report that she loves it, it is causing my ILs to think I am crazy Wink and our Pup has gained weight and her ribs are no longer visible.

But.......it's costing me a fortune! I have been using Natural Instinct which is a complete food and as confidence has grown replaced some meals of NI with a chicken piece etc but I need to find a cheaper supplier.

The butchers round here arent really up for supplying bones etc although I will get brave and ask again but would prefer to use a food I could supplement.

Many thanks

I use Landywoods. I think their prices are pretty good, although the minimum order is £30 which is quite a lot of food (see near bottom photo on my profile) so you really need a large freezer to store it all in.

The free flow minces (Prize Choice iirc) are not too bad value either.

I can get free chicken carcasses from my butcher but they are well and truly stripped of meat so if I give my dog one I have to add in a bit of mince too. Too much bone and she gets bunged up.
The value packs of chicken wings from sainsbury's and tinned pilchards in tomato sauce are the most expensive part of her diet.

I started on Natural Instinct but I agree it is v £££.

It does take a far bit of detective work to find suppliers in your area, and there will be some surprising sources. There will be the usual suppliers, pet shops, online sites and butchers but you need to delve deeper.

Ask a few butchers who supplies their chicken (it will usually be a massive chicken processing plant) if it is local to you check if they have a factory shop open to the public. We have one about 20 miles from us and I buy whole chickens from as little as 50p, it does vary some weeks they are as much as £2 but usually somewhere in between.

Chicken wings are cheap, my butcher will also order me chicken or turkey necks at 50p a kilo. Then you have greyhound men, they will know suppliers of raw meat, although usually minced, but it will be chicken, beef or tripe mixes.

All of this tends to involve buying in bulk. We bought a second hand upright freezer with 6 drawers for £50 from gumtree & it is solely for the dogs, was in garage but moved it out to shed when we put electric into shed.

If all fails & you still have difficulties, put an ad on gumtree. I did a few months ago asking for local suppliers of raw meat suitable for greyhounds and I got three suppliers, plus a few messages suggesting others & a supply of rabbit.

We feed the raw meat bone diet, this includes a lot of full chickens, some minced tripe and tripe & chicken mix, eggs, fish and a few household scraps.
