He will be 6 and a half months old. I am wibbling about the anaesthetic. Tell me not to be so bloody daft and that this is the right, good thing to do.

Don't be so bloody daft Grin.

I wibbled with our younger dog for over a year; that's how pathetic I was. I was so terrified of losing her. This was despite the fact that our elder dog had his nuts off 9 years ago and you wouldn't know he'd even had an operation. Finally, just before Christmas, I knew I had to get on and do it and stop being so pathetic.

I took her in on the Friday morning and was almost crying. I paid extra for her to have a drip because it apparently aids recovery and means they can react quicker if something goes wrong. In the event, the operation went really easily and I'm sure she didn't really need it - it just gave her another bad place to bite after the op Wink. She was a bit shaky and wobbly that night. By Saturday morning she was almost back to normal. By Monday she was raiding the bins, attacking our other dog, stealing stuff behind our back.....just like every other day!

I did the right thing. There can never be any 100% guarantees but I'm sure you are too.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 06/01/2012 13:44

Don't be so bloody daft! It's definitely the right thing to do! He'll be fine :)

Is he your PFD by any chance?

ChickensGoMeh · 06/01/2012 14:08

Erm, yes Blush I adore the little mud magnet. I remember that someone here lost their little pup during a neutering op, and the thought of it is just...ouch.

Yes, kid did, and it made me very jittery - I nearly didn't have Poppy done. I spoke to my vet about it and she said you can never guarantee - and these things do occasionally happen - but it is very rare. In the end I decided I had to bite the bullet - and it was fine.

wildfig · 06/01/2012 15:08

What happened to Kid was very, very sad, but also quite rare. I've had both my dogs neutered, and they were both back to normal the following day. Madame did try to milk it for a bit, but she couldn't quite keep the Tragic Invalid routine up when food was involved.

But I did have a bit of a cry both times when I left them at the vet's. So you're not alone in feeling wibbly.

belindarose · 06/01/2012 15:12

He'll be fine. I appreciated the peace and quiet the day he was in! Didn't need to use the collar after the first couple of days as his wound healed very quickly and he didn't bother with it.

ditavonteesed · 06/01/2012 16:27

his twin will be following him very shortly, just waiting for him to cock his leg first.

ChickensGoMeh · 10/01/2012 11:49

Shiiiiiit, it's tomorrow. Am feeding Jasper lumps of cheese every time I pass the fridge out of guilt.

I had my 9 month old done before Christmas.

I was really worried and it was a looong day, waiting for the call from the vet to collect him.

He was completely chipper afterwards! He hated the buster collar though, so that was on for all of 5 minutes.

wildfig · 10/01/2012 21:30

The day before I took BigFigDog in for his op, I filmed him on my camera, barrelling ahead on his lead, his mighty nuts swinging merrily from side to side like a cross between Buster Gonad and John Wayne. A year on, he still runs in exactly the same way. Nuts are not an essential part of being a maaaaaan, for him. It's a state of mind.

Inthepotty · 10/01/2012 21:44

So long Jaspers knackers! Hope he is ok tommorow and you don't miss him too much.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 11/01/2012 09:32

Good luck today Jasper!

Scuttlebutter · 11/01/2012 10:27

Good luck today!

ChickensGoMeh · 11/01/2012 13:48

Aw, poor boy :-( He looks very sad. But he did scoff chicken and rice before going back to sleep.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 11/01/2012 17:39

Hooray! I hope he's happily recuperating at home and being spoilt rotten :) glad he's ok

musicposy · 11/01/2012 21:41

Oh, glad to hear he's at home! He'll probably be a bit groggy tonight, but they bounce back amazingly quickly. :)

belindarose · 12/01/2012 08:49

How's he doing this morning? Mine was a bit pathetic and 'hungover' for a day or so, but quickly bouncing around.

ChickensGoMeh · 12/01/2012 09:18

He's very waggy, but gingerly sitting and laying. He was most put out to be left at home on the school run this morning, but it's a half hour round trip and I don't want him to over do it. He did have explosive diarrhea last night, but good boy that he is he managed to get outside first.

OP posts:
SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 12/01/2012 11:41

Oh what a good boy managing to hold on! I imagine sitting down is quite sore for him, get him a rubber ring to sit on :o glad he's doing ok.

winterreise · 13/01/2012 21:03

I wonder why you had it done so young? Our vets won't castrate under a year old and I agree. Much better to let pup grow up first, it affects growth of long bones and isn't routinely necessary for boy dogs anyway.

ChickensGoMeh · 13/01/2012 21:32

My vet castrates from 5 months. We had it done because he will be staying with a boarder who has other dogs staying reasonably regularly, and him being neutered means there won't be a problem with her taking in bitches at the same time. Plus, I wanted to be certain that my dog wouldn't add to the dog population as there are enough dogs in rescue as it is (he's a cross breed). And on a purely personal level, I felt it was better to have him done before he became in any way frustrated or developed sexual behaviours. But I realise that other people may disagree.

musicposy · 13/01/2012 21:50

We had ours done at more or less the same age as yours - maybe a month older. He's now a happy, healthy 10 year old. You would never believe he was quite an old dog so it certainly hasn't affected him adversely. He was also a much nicer dog for having had it done.

I also think owners of male dogs should take as much responsibility for not producing a litter of unwanted puppies as those of female dogs (and I speak as an owner of both). My parents had an unneutered male and he used to go stir crazy if there was a female in season anywhere in the village - off his food, trying to escape, whining constantly. Their current dog they've had done and like us with ours, they think he's a happier dog for it.

Anyhow, I'm really glad Jasper is doing well and on the up. It's a good feeling to be the other side of the op :)

ChickensGoMeh · 13/01/2012 22:14

We have to board Jas in February, so got it done now so that we could be sure he'd be healed. I did ask the vet about growth, but as he's a small dog he's more or less grown so the vet felt the benefits outweighed any small risk. He is much more himself today :-)
