Dog is becoming reactive to off lead dogs whilst on the lead. What can I do?

Another day, another off lead dog running up to my dog, barking, snapping, jumping up, another fuck wit owner "he's only playing, he's friendly, he's only young blah fucking blah"

Elsie is coming up to two. She is fine with other dogs if they are both off lead, not desperate to interact (would rather be retrieving tennis balls) but will meet and greet nicely, waggy tail, bit of arse sniffing and off we go.

Unfortunately when she is on-lead we have had enough unpleasant encounters with off lead dogs making a fucking nuisance of themselves that she showing all sorts of calming/fear signals when she spots a dog running towards her; lip licking, ears back, tail down, she drops down into a cowering type walk, head turning and Sad hackles up. I very much do not want to get to the point where fear turns to aggression, and obviously I'd rather she was not scared at all.

As much as possible we get in the car and drive now to walks where we will be alone, or she will be off lead, but there is one walk we do on shitty weather days like today where imo she has to be on the lead (busy canal tow path, lots of cyclists) but we are guaranteed to be met by off lead dogs.

What do I do? We cannot move away from the dog as we are stuck between a canal and a hedge.

Would classes be of any help to reduce her anxiety around dogs when she on the lead? Any clicker techniques?

I am so fucking fed up I could cry but it seems a whole swathe of the dog owning public are blissfully unaware that they should put their dog on the lead when they see an on lead dog approaching. Wondering what I can do to improve the situation?

Read the info on this post here

It will apply to your situation - you will need to make more space between you and the other dogs so may want to walk somewhere other than the canal or be prepared to walk back the way you have come for a bit.

Thanks minimu. What does BAT stand for?

I had read that thread and I'm sure she will be great with the technique, but if the off lead dogs are intent on "saying hello Hmm" and we are stuck, and we do get stuck as Elsie (all 24kg of her) just lies down until the other dog leaves or is removed by its owner, then what do we do? I try and do cheery "come on come on now" and walk away quickly but that seems to freak her out more. She would rather be on the floor than moving away.

Sorry Behaviour Adjustment Training

The following link tells you about it a bit more but the book is fab

here

I agree it is hard - if you can plan ahead so if you see a bouncy dog coming change direction and go a different way (hard by the canal - maybe get some wadersGrin).

You can also block the other dog by standing between you and the other dog and put your hand out in a stop command most (although not all) dogs will stop and back off.

you could also throw treats on the floor away from your dog so the other dog stops to eat those (but be ready for complaints from owners but if they controlled their dog..........)

I always ask the owners to call their dog - this usually never happens as the owners have no control over their dogs but makes me feel better to see the owner try to grab their dogs!

I would want to try to avoid getting so close that she goes on the floor as this for her is a very stressful situation however if it does happen and for all the planning sometimes we get it wrong I would just stand in front of her and the other dog and encourage the other dog to go by walking into the other dog.

Thank you minimu for you (as always) really helpful advice. BAT links really interesting thanks.

Grin Grin @ waders. Elsie would be in the canal like a shot if I let her, another reason she is on the lead.

Tips for encounters we can't avoid also very useful. Must implement "can you put your dog on the lead please" more. I'll be getting a reputation as 'that bossy cow on the canal' Grin
