Can you adopt if you work?

My DMum let her dog go a few weeks ago (to old age) and is now hankering after another dog.

She would like a specific breed but it's quite rare in the UK, so she's not holding out for this one.

She's also considering rescuing a dog, but my query is whether any rescue centre would let her have one - she works full time as does my DDad. There's no question about the dog being well looked after - Dad often took our old dog to work with him, and he would be walked twice a day until his arthritis truely was too bad (last 3 months or so of his 17yr life).

I know with the time of year some rescue centres won't rehome anyway, so am taking that into account.

But have any of you sucessfully adopted dogs though you (both) work full time?

Lots of people will tell you no, it's not fair on the dog.

But, if you choose the right dog it should be fine. I pay £5 a day for a dog walker to come in and let my greyhound out for a wee at lunchtime. Greyhounds and other calm, lazy breeds are perfect for full-time workers but for example a lab, staffy, terrier etc is usually a no no unless they're getting on a bit.

Many rescues will adopt to you but only if you can let the dog out at lunchtime and only if it's a dog that will cope, in their opinion.

Ok cheers. One or other of my brothers are at home during the day so can let the dog out - this isn't the problem. It's just that as my parents would be the owners, therefore responsible, I didn't know whether the RC would consider them.

They have managed to adopt a ca. 5 month old greyhound-x from a local centre, but it's not a full-blooded sanctuary like RSPCA. Ah well, see how they get on. Already he is a very laid back pup in comparison to their last dog, so should be good fun!
