Get that clicker charged and get your dogs thinking

The great thing about winter training is you can do it indoors in the warmGrin.

on at the mo and wanted some new ideas! I taught the walk to heel with the clicking method I pinched from an old thread you were on and it's going FAB, little pup walks perfectly 99% of the time! Which was a big deal for me as he seems to Lab X HORSE!!

love it, our current focus (the kids are trying to do it over the hols) is teaching the dogs to play dead if the kids shoot them. it is brilliant watching them breaking it down it only took them 5 ins to work out a dog each would work better than trying to do it together. I lack imagination with clicker so that was really good.

Tricks are so important to all dogs
They really increase the bond with you
They really boost a dogs confidence
They teach the dog to be aware of their body eg what their back legs are doing etc
They keep a dog young and stimulated

Teaching the trick is really not that important but what it does teach the dog is that you are fun to be around and hence all other unwanted behaviours tend to disappear. - play with other dogs or do a handstand with you and get lots of praise and reward!

Soon the dog will want to do tricks with you more than other behaviour and so the actual teaching of a trick becomes more rewarding.

Every activity I teach as a trick, heeling is a trick, look dog is a trick, etc.

Once your dog gets used to learning tricks, are easy to teach.

Eg my old girl can roll over, so this week her trick is to roll over and cover herself with a blanket. She is loving it!

My young collie is a herder (and a nipper of sheeps ankles!) so he is learning to push a gym ball. He gets rewarded for pushing but not nipping - he is now fine out with the sheep.

I am trying to teach "hold your tail" this week to the youngsters most of my dogs are now turning into frenzied circle grabbing their tails the minute I get the clicker out!! Grin

Can you tell I hate preparing for Christmas and should be doing some cooking Xmas Grin

Thought I'd bump this thread as need a clicker boost myself. We'd been doing quite well but out of the habit as he was away over Christmas. Above link won't open on my phone but will look on the computer later for ideas. He can do nice basics, and we don't use the clicker for those anymore - is that right? Yesterday he learnt to spin around and we'rw doing a play dead trick (although only at the 'hands up' stage at the moment). He's also doing really well at laying down for up to a minute at a time while I prepare food/ eat, with clicks and treats thrown in. Must remember to keep up with that as it's big progress.
