I have to leave Jasper (5 month old cocker/springer pup) at a boarder's house over Christmas. In fact, I have to leave him from Thursday morning until the following Tuesday. The boarder is fabulous, huge house, lots of land and five labradors of her own for him to play with. He will have his own room in the house and will be able to spend most of his time charging about the house/land with the other dogs and the boarder's extended family. But now it comes to it, I'm dreading leaving him. No reason but that I don't want to. However, we're travelling for Christmas and there's no way he can come with us. I've never used kennels/a boarder before. So those of you that have, tell me he'll be fine, have a great time and won't want to know me when we get back

My springer is going away to a boarders for Christmas too. He went in November and loved it. It's our trainers' home and they have several of their own. He came back with better manners last time, so I'm hoping they work some more Christmas miracles for us. I'm actually looking forward to the break - it'll be nice not to be cleaning up mud from the floor for a week!

He'll be fine, it sounds lovely. My SIL does home boarding and the dogs that stay with her have a lovely time and are very well cared for.

I have an image in my of him sat out in the rain, sad music playing and a voiceover going 'Jasper was a neglected dog. His owner fucked off for Christmas leaving him mentally scarred'. I may be being a tad melodramatic

Haha! Poor jasper with his melodramatic music!

I cried when i left dog one for the first time when he was 7m for a week. He had a fab time. Everytime i take him to board with the trainer he drags me down the street and is thrilled to be there. If we bump into him on walks dog one is all for going home with him and his three...

He will be fine

"Huge house, lots of land, his own room?"
Hell, I'll go!

mycatsaysach · 20/12/2011 13:19

ha ha he will be fine

my lab goes to stay with 5 rhodesian ridgebacks and never wants to come home

at home he is not allowed on furniture or bedroom but at the boarders he slept on a fur throw Grin

scrappydoodah · 20/12/2011 14:07

I've only had to use a boarder once, and the experience put me off for life. He liked it too much.... ran off back into the kitchen when I arrived to collect him. Grin The little sh*te was won over by the aga. My kitchen just can't compete.

He'll be fine.

Happy Christmas!

Clam I will fight you for it!

He will be fine. I have other peoples dogs staying here . Dogs are great they put on the sad face when the owners leave, the door shuts the dogs are in the paddock with my guys having a fab time, chasing, playing etc. The owners come back they charge to the door to greet them as if they have spent the whole day lying in their beds in tears!

He will be fine (if you like and trust the boarder)

They can be pretty similar to small children at school/nursery - one of my DT's used to howl and hang on to my legs when he was in Reception and I was riddled with guilt - until the teacher told me to take a walk around the playground and look through the window on my way back. Lo and behold he was laughing and playing - critter! The dogs are the same - they look sadly at you as you walk away, with those big reproachful eyes, until they're sure you can't see them, then say "sod that, where's the party"! Jasper will be fine, and your time away will be a lot easier, enjoy!

He'll be fine. I regularly leave my dogs with a friend up the road who has six hounds of her own, and even though the conditions are a bit more spartan than my thoroughly spoiled dogs are used to, they still leap out of the car and charge their way in there every time. It's nice for them to hang out with their own doggy kind now and again - good for socialisation. We call it Muttlins. (Or Dogwarts.)
