Just that really, I have a bone from the pork can I give it to the dog to chew on? Will it be safe?

I don't think so- all cooked bones are risky, I've read.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 19/12/2011 16:15

I would say no, roasted bones tend to splinter and as someone who has spent upwards of £300 to get a dog who was screaming in pain when trying to poo operated on at the vets after a roast bone (from pet shop) I never ever give them to my dogs. nor would I recommend them.

And breathe.

NO. is the answer. Grin

thestringcheesemassacre · 19/12/2011 16:15

Definitely no. As per above. Cooked bones splinter.

IfYouSeeKaySanta · 19/12/2011 16:16

No. Raw bones are fine but cooking makes them brittle and likely to splinter which can cause injury to the stomach and intestines.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2011 16:20

I wouldn't do it deliberately no.

DIll ate a roast chicken carcass recently and thankfully was fine afterwards. It was a worry though.

Thanks all, bone is now safely in a bin outside - what prompted me to ask is because I saw a huge ham bone for sale in the pet shop which I was going to buy as a Christmas present for the pup, but I also have the bone from tonight's pork.

I've taken Jax's story to heart so I'll just buy him a hide chew for Christmas then.

Shockat Jaxs story. I bought a bone from PAH when my dog was 12 months old, the package said it was smoked. I remember thinking that it must be safe or they wouldn't be allowed to sell it, but it looked roasted and smelled delicious. Dog ate half then I got worried at the speed he was demolishing it and took it away. The next day he produced vast quantities of loose poo, also tried to be sick a couple of times but was fine by the evening. I think we had a lucky escape.

I wouldn't give cooked bones either (though my dog has also scavenged cooked chicken bones and thankfully been fine).

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 20/12/2011 14:09

The roast bones smell lovely but I just wouldnt ever buy/give one to a dog now. Hide chews, raw bones and pigs ears (boak) is what my dogs get.

I have to say that I wasnt a first time dog owner either - it just never crossed my mind that the roast bones sold in ALL pet shops would harm my huge GSD. AFter parting with a large wad of cash and seeing the instant relief on my girlie dogs face the vet said that if she had her way roast bones would be banned. Sad I have never heard a dog scream so loudly before or since.

scrappydoodah · 20/12/2011 14:14

omg Jax. I buy those.... at least I did, until now. Thank you for the warning. Like everyone else I assumed that they were 'special' and safe for dogs.

Ephiny · 20/12/2011 14:18

It's amazing they sell those bones in pet shops. DP bought one for our dog, thinking it must be OK as they wouldn't sell them otherwise. I said 'no' and it went in the bin, but I wouldn't have known unless I'd read it on here!

I am glad my horror story has helped some on The Doghouse. Smile
