Re-homing a springer spaniel

We got a phone call on Friday about a 5yr springer spaniel who needs to be re-homed. Unfortunately his owners are now in a position that he needs to be re-homed and they contacted the breeder, he called me. The current owners are finding it impossible to give him the exercise and attention that he requires and deserves.

We visited him today...love Xmas Grin

He has a sweet and sociable nature, a bit overweight and needs further training but nothing major. He's fully house trained and will sit when told etc etc.

His owners where lovely and answer all our questions. They also asked us loads of questions {quite right too} They seemed clearly very upset about having him re-homed but said it was the right thing to do for him. They also wanted to visit us and check us out. This to me is a great sign, clearly they love him and what him to be happy and settled.

My main question is: Would it be right for me to ask for a vet check etc before we take him? If so should we pay for this check since we've asked for it? All his jads / paperwork was in order too.

If it all works out, he'll come to us in the New Year.

Many thanks,

Scarlett

{very excited}

DH has good experience with Springer's and he says nothing wrong with getting a health check done and yes, pay for it yourself. However they are problematic dogs health wise. Springer's are massive fun, you'll love him to bits. Great with kids too. Let me know if you need any tips re training, DH a gundog trainer.

NOT NOT NOT problematic dogs health wise! Confused

scarlettlips · 18/12/2011 20:53

Thanks fannybanjo He's not being used as a gundog, but he was a working breed and I think this might be half the problem, they can't give him the time. They also have a small child and is used to older children and dogs too.

I grew up with 3 springers, so know the breed well. 2 working and 1 house. All just brilliant.

I would like to train him better, have already found a few places. Where are you?

We are Chester scarlett. Well sounds like you are well used to the breed. When you say he's a working dog - in what way?

fannybanjo · 18/12/2011 20:58

Oh I see you say working breed as in lineage. Yes, he'll need good training then. Consistency is key.

scarlettlips · 19/12/2011 09:35

Yes fanny as a lineage, i think the honest truth is he doesn't get out enough. And they haven't kept up the training. The owners said if it was raining he didn't get walked..Hmm Shock

Going to invite them over and see if we can take him for a work on/off lead. He's 5 so fingers cross he's now a bit less mad Xmas Grin We played in the garden, he was happy to fetch and did sit when I asked him...however 'stay' clearly isn't in this vocab so to speak!

One of the main commands DH teaches is stay as its so important for a working dog. He spends hours in our garden and our dogs don't move an inch! The poor dog, bloody hell, don't buy a dog if you're not prepared to walk it in all weathers - its not the tropics! Bad pet owners make me very Angry - its just sheer bone idleness.

Well I'm glad you're going to give this gorgeous dog a happy home! When you thinking again of taking him?

scarlettlips · 20/12/2011 20:00

Just had an email from the owner...he's going to a family with a farm in Suffolk! He'll spend all day outside chasing a tractors..holy cow i can't compete with that Xmas Grin He'll also have a few doggy pals so he won't get lonely.

Guess it wasn't meant to be, oh well! Sad

Oh no! That sounds a bit Lassie like doesn't it...? Ahh bless, are you disappointed?

scarlettlips · 21/12/2011 22:14

Xmas Envy i'd quite fancy living on a farm in Suffolk! {says the farmers daughter} i'm sure it's for the best, it would of been lovely to have him but clearly it wasn't meant to be. Our time and dog will come.
