Poppy is being spayed today. Have held off for ages through fear of putting her through the op but she's had two seasons and I know with the risk of pyometra etc I really do need to get it done.

But I'm sat here looking at her and wondering how I'm ever going to bring myself to take her down there.

Older dog and cat are both neutered so no idea why I'm being such a wuss!

Our pup was castrated yesterday and I felt the same. The vet called me as soon as he woke up as she knew how anxious I was! He is now home and feeling a bit sorry for himself but I'm sure we've done the right thing.

I'm holding your hand!

here for you, you know its the right thing to do, and it is horrible but she will recover quickly and you wont have to worry about many things. be strong.

In 36 hours you'll be wondering how on earth you're going to follow the vets advice of "keep her quiet" and "lead walks only for 10 days" as she's bouncing off the walls as if nothing had happened. Smile

The shaking/shivering and moaning are just effects of the anesthetic and broke my heart to listen to and watch BUT she will get over it very quickly. Mine didn't go to the loo until the next morning (when she staggered upstairs to tell me to let her out instead of shouting Confused ) so don't worry too much if she doesn't want to go at home, she will have gone at the vets before she's allowed home.

Best thing to do if you're not going to breed from her or if she's ever had a phantom which mine had after her first season although watching her with the puppy we've had for a couple of months, I do feel a little sad that she's not going to have puppies of her own which is very silly of me!

Hand holding here too.

Tomorrow evening she should be back to normal (If not tomorrow morning!)

You are doing the right thing.

I find I feel better if I explain to my dog exactly what is going to happen before hand - we have a little chat! yea I know mad dog lady but I am sure they understand and then I don't feel so bad!

Scuttlebutter · 16/12/2011 10:47

Ahhh at Minimu's chat. I talk to ours too. Xmas Blush
One interesting thing is that laporoscopic (sp?) ops are slowly coming in for dogs. Like keyhole surgery for humans, ops are less painful, less invasive, quicker recovery time. Not yet widely adopted - as I understand it, specialist training and equipment needed for vets but it could be more widely used in the future? more info here

musicposy · 16/12/2011 12:19

Aaww thank you everybody Xmas Smile

Left her there at 10am this morning. I did chat to her beforehand actually! I said that she would be better for having it done and I would be back for her later and she would be home and she had to be strong and get through it because I need her and love her (huge sob).

I opted to pay extra for her to have a drip because vet said she will recover better and there's better outcomes should there be any complications. Vet said they don't put it on the form as it's extra but it's what they do if they do their own dogs. I think she could see I was a bit upset!

Poppy was quite happy, investigating what the vet was up to. When vet took her out the back, though, she looked at me as if to say "aren't you coming?".

Vet has said she will phone as soon as op is done. I'm a bit tearful but it was the right time to do it - I have 2 weeks off work (I work at home mainly but it still means I'm less busy and there aren't people coming and going all the time) and she is between seasons.

Thank you so much for all your kind words.

She's back from vets and all went well :)

She's a bit dopey and shaking a bit now and then, and whining occasionally but was delighted to see us and otherwise seems good. Will just keep an eye on her now.

hope she had a good night. glad she's ok xx

musicposy · 17/12/2011 11:28

Thank you all!

Bad night in that she wouldn't settle, kept trying to lick the stitches, so I put the collar on her and then she was thrashing about for ages trying to get it off. Finally she decided to sleep on top of me so I had a plastic lampshade squashed against my head all night Confused. She also did a lot of complaining and moaning.

This morning I have a different problem. She has apparently forgotten she had a major op yesterday Grin. She thinks that leaping all over things and charging around are good ideas. I'm trying to persuade her that rest is a good idea. She is unconvinced. Mmmmmm. Xmas Smile
