My gorgeous 8 year old lab is very sick. He has had sickness and diarrhea for a couple of weeks. an ultrasound showed infection in the bowel and the lymph nodes, but they were unable to take a sample for biopsy. the potent antibiotics have shown no improvement, so now the vet has said there is a possiblity it is cancer, but inoperable due to the position. I am so very very sad. He isn't at all ill though, he is still running away and stealing food and being the horror he has always been. He can't really be so ill can he?

Oh I'm sorry :( I have no idea re his illness, but there are a couple of vets who post on here so hopefully they'll be along soon :)

I'm so sorry :(. I don't know about his illness either, but I wish him all the best.

UPDATE
He has a tumour. It is inoperable. He is still seems so well though. Has anyone else had experience of this? Will his health rapidly decline? I can't bear the thought of losing him and obviously don't want him to be in any pain. I can't believe he is so ill.

I'm sorry- losing a pet at any age is horrible, but he's barely into middle age.

My old (12yr old) border collie was diagnosed with cancer (mammary tumours) in September 2009 and was put to sleep Nov 5th same year. She was not well in herself- she also had arthritis, and wasn't really eating much at all. she kept up a rally/fade marathon for a fortnight before it got too much for her. You will know when it's time

I'm so sorry, awful news for you Sad

My old (14ish) lab x had an inoperable tumour and was pts nearly nine years ago, and although the feelings fade they are still very clear in my mind. I feel for you.

In his case, he probably had it for a while and wasn't ill - slower than before (we thought it was old age), but still enjoying walks. He stole a half eaten leg of lamb a few days before he died. He was only diagnosed because he had a bout of severe abdo pain one evening, which just got worse - making him pant and shake. The vet gave pain killers and took him in for x-rays, and saw the tumour immediately - it had probably caused an internal bleed. We had him pts pretty much straight away, as he was in pain and not going to get better - but up until that day he really was enjoying life to the point where we didn't know he was ill.

Which is all to say, if your boy is running and stealing food, and enjoying himself, then enjoy that time with him. He may be fine until he is ill - iyswim - at which point, as Santa says, you will know.

I'm sorry.
