How to stop my ***** children from winding the puppy up so he bites them?

He is 10 weeks old and is a sweet little chap, but whenever the children play with him they wind him into a frenzy and he growls and bites them Sad

He doesn't do it to me, he seems quite submissive to me and I think that is because I have been strict from the start.

No matter how often I tell them to play fetch games and STOP when he starts to get manic, the puppy ends up growling, snarling and biting. The vet said it is normal puppy behaviour but I am worried he is going to end up being aggressive Sad

Aggressive? This is the dog house on MN, they do oblige!!
I think they have a point, though, this is a critical period for good socialisation. I simply wouldn't allow unsupervised contact between puppy + children for a while.

I don't think anyone is being aggressive on here, in fact, the only aggressive behaviour I've read about is you describing your kids behaviour.

to quote "wind him into a frenzy". Hmm

'nuff said...

Grafit - I'm glad its going better now the boundaries are in place Smile

And please don't be put off the Doghouse - there is a lot of excellent advice to be had here on the practicalities of dog ownership.

Well done Grafit, glad the boundaries are in place and things are going well. Ditto what Grimma said - please don't be put off, just take the bits that are helpful!

Lizcat, I thought as much - I need to borrow someone the dds will adore, and get them to say what I say Grin

I think the people on here are passionate about dogs and their welfare. Having only recently discovered the forum I can say hand on heart I am so glad I did. People have gone out of their way to help me and give really useful advice.

The internet is a funny place, because things can come across in a manner they are not meant, and it is easy to take offence.

Hi Grafit. just to say when i was a kid and we got our puppy (when i was 15 ish) she would play really rough with me because she seemed to know i was the youngest, like i was another puppy iyswim? She was the only girl in the litter and her mum had played really rough with her to toughen her up and as a result her version of play was quite rough! Its really hard for kids, who are obviously excited and want to play with the puppy! Glad they are getting somewhere. We found the dog struggled to know when playtime was over and she was such a biter we spent a few weeks sitting with out feet in cardboard boxes so she couldnt go for the ankles! I had to learn from my mum and be tougher and puppy learned the respect thing eventually. Mind you, she still gets silly when she sees me! Oh,and she doesn't have "issues" and has never attacked another dog or tried to eat a baby!... enjoy him!
