My dog went missing tonight after some workmen left the front door open. I've phoned the police and the local dog warden and left our details with them invade anyone reports him. He is a gentle little Westie that hates the rain and it's teaming it down outside. I've been driving round the village all night looking for him and all family and friends have put pics on Facebook.

Can anyone else think of anywhere else I can leave my details. Poor little Teddy, please come home soon x

Oh no :( How about local vets? And maybe animal shelters? I hope you find him.

JollyJinglyJoo · 12/12/2011 23:00

Phone the local vets and also the local animal shelters in the morning, if he hasn't come home. It's horrible- I've had this, but he'll probably be hiding from the rain somewhere. Do you have your number on his collar? Some kind person may well take him in. Really hope you find him soon.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 12/12/2011 23:00

Can you print some leaflets and put them through doors, at the gates of the park, on lamp-posts? You must be worried sick, I'm so sorry.

wildfig · 12/12/2011 23:02

Oh, you poor thing. What a nightmare. Have you phoned round all the local vets? Is he chipped - can you phone the database to see if he's been reported?

Fingers crossed someone brings him round tonight.

Scuttlebutter · 12/12/2011 23:05

Oh, dear Jilly, you must be so worried about him. Firstly, is he chipped and wearing ID?

Second, get on to the Doglost website here and report him immediately. You can upload pics too - this is a very busy national site and a whole army of volunteers will then be looking for your dog.

Tomorrow, ring round all the local vets. You should also call the Council Highways department Sad to see about any dead dogs they may find - many Councils don't automatically scan dead dogs for chips. If you are in Wales, this website here gives a list of which Councils do and don't, including the three Trunk Road Agencies (Highways Agency in England). Also, call neighbouring local authorities. Remember, Dog Wardens do not automatically notify each other of dogs found, so particularly if your dog is not chipped this is VERY important. Remember too they only have seven days in a pound, so don't delay.

Notify Breed clubs in your area, local rescues, put him on your blog, Facebook, etc. If relevant, stress that he is chipped and neutered - these willl make him much less attractive to thieves.

Keeping fingers crossed for Teddy and for you.

JillyWillyPops · 12/12/2011 23:36

Thanks everyone for all the info. Unfortunately he's not chipped and he didn't have his collar on as he was in the house (only wears it when he's out walking as it irritates him) I feel so Sad as both the kids love him like a brother. My 18 month old especially likes snuggling up to him. :( I'm going to give everywhere a ring in the morning.

Come home Teddy, we miss you.

You poor thing - our boy escaped when the postie left our gate open. Luckily enough the local farmer coaxed him onto his tractor and just kept him with him.

The dogslost website is excellent but definately ring round all of the local vets.

Have you tried knocking neighbours doors and asking them to check their sheds, playhouses, etc? Chances are if he hates the rain he's found shelter nearby.

If he's friendly and wearing a collar if somebody finds him they'll probably just take him home for the night so he is fed and warm and will start trying to find who he belongs to in the morning so try not to panic.

Hope he's home soon.

suzi2 · 12/12/2011 23:41

Definitely contact that doglost website - the posts usually go all over facebook if you link so everyone in the area knows to keep an eye out.

Hopefully someone has taken him in for the night. Put up notices in the morning. Also ask people to check gardens, around sheds etc for somewhere he could be sheltering.

suzi2 · 12/12/2011 23:41

x posted - great minds think alike with the sheds thing ;-)

Sillyoldelf · 12/12/2011 23:42

I know somebody that lost a puppy recently and they went on local radio to do an appeal .

GrimmaTheNome · 12/12/2011 23:43

Oh dear - if he hates rain he's probably not gone far. Jolly may be right - if he's got no collar on, anyone who found him might have just taken him in for now. Signs up on lampposts etc worth a try.

Poor you, poor teddy. Sad

Scuttlebutter · 12/12/2011 23:51

OP, when Teddy comes home, please get him chipped as a Christmas present to your family. It saves so much worry and heartache, and will also make Teddy much less attractive to thieves. Lots of Councils do it free of charge, and our local PAH only charges £10. Worth it for the peace of mind.

Another suggestion, if you have a library, Council offices, local housing office etc then put up notices, also local shops, and parks. Other dog walkers are often a good source of information.

Fingers crossed. xx

Any news?

sb6699 · 13/12/2011 21:26

Has Teddy managed to find his way home?

JillyWillyPops · 13/12/2011 22:05

Good news everyone!!! After searching all night for him, I was sat at work in tears when a lovely man phoned me. He had seen the numerous messages that had been posted on Facebook by myself and friends. He was about to take him to the dog warden :(. Last night he had seen teddy wandering about outside his house and took him in as it was raining.

So we've got a happy happy household today x

GrimmaTheNome · 14/12/2011 10:46

Oh good - a lovely man as you say. Restores your faith in human nature doesn't it?

As well as the chip, might be worth trying to find a less irritating collar too.
