My lovely Tibetan Terrier was attacked this morning. He was on a lead. Across the road another dog also on a lead slipped it and chased Oscar and attacked him. My dog did not fight back. Horrifying experience. After what seemed like a lifetime the owner managed to prise the teeth off Oscar and shake him off my dog. She said she would pay if he went to the vet.
He has been to the vet and has a 2 inch hole in his hind leg and I guess some bruising. He has had painkillers and antibiotics. He is now asleep on the sofa. £134 later my dilemma is do I let this dog owner pay the vet bill or do I let it go? I genuinely don't know what to do.It was completely unprovoked. At the very least I will go round and advise her to buy a muzzle. He may need another trip to the vet yet, they were worried about further injuries showing over the next few days. WWYD?

The other owner offered to pay so present her with the bill. I don't see what the problem is. Do you know who she is?
Surely it would be covered under her pet insurance - though I'd rather just pay up now and avoid the sky-high premiums next year.

Ohh poor Oscar, horrid other dog. I hope the owner was highly [embarrassed]

She offered, make her pay up. It's only right. Can you get the vet to bill her directly? When did your insurance company say?

MrsHankey · 11/12/2011 18:58

Def make her pay, yes, it slipped the lead but its her fault the collar wasn't on properly and also her fault that she couldn't recall or control her dog.

Dog attacked mine once, was being walked by a teenager & slipped its harness, just went for my dog, very scary & girl could do nothing to control it. Thankfully no damage, but very spooked dog and DS who witnessed.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 11/12/2011 19:52

I'd ask for payment too. If her dog's that strong and determined you are right, it should be on a muzzle as well. She might be covered with on her insurance, some of them have a liability extra don't they?

You poor thing. My friend's tiny poodle was attacked yesterday. I saw them both straight afterwards and they were both shaking. She was covered in his blood and on her way to the animal hospital Sad.

Yep take the payment and also make sure that this is not the final payment in case more treatment behavioural or physical is required.

As soon as you see a dog approaching in an aggressive way - make yourself as big as possible and stand between you and the dog - wide arms and give a very strong stop signal with your hands - this can deter many dogs. Move backwards with your dog behind you until to a safe distance.

If the attack has taken place it can only be evaluated at the time but I would rather be bitten than my dog and would physically try to separate them. But i do have experience in being able to judge the situation.

Thanks for the advice and comments. My husband also given me advice on what to do with an aggressive dog, but not sure in the heat of the moment could focus enough to do what you suggest minimuu though will bear it in mind. Have not had the courage to speak to the owner today as still too upset. Will take round a copy of the bill tomorrow and see what happens.

Same here minimu the dog that attacked mine was stopped by me doing that & shouting 'no' very firmly in front of it, they had separated for a minute & it went to attack again.

It stopped long enough for person with it to re-attach lead.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 12/12/2011 12:09

Definitely take the bill round and let her know that this is NOT the final bill, there may be a further bill in the next few weeks.

vjg13 · 12/12/2011 13:01

Don't go on your own as you sound very shocked (as expected) but do take the money and relay what the vet has told you. My dog was bitten and did need extra antibiotics. I think it is reasonable to suggest using a muzzle and maybe a harness too.I hope you are both feeling a bit better. Smile
