This afternoon I popped out to the shops, was parking up when a beautiful but HUGE springer appeared from nowhere and jumped up all over me! This was a quiet residential side street, just off the busy road that connects my town to the dual carriageway.

I had some cheese in my pocket (as you do!!) and the dog sat for a treat whilst I checked the tag on collar. Just a name, and a number that just rings once then rings off??? Anyway, I hooked DS' belt through collar (poor child!) and we went knocking on doors, no1 knew whose dog it was so I took her down the river/woods walk that's the popular walking spot round our way. Not many people about, no1 knew whose dog it was....

So, I sort of brought it home. The dog looks exhausted by all excitement, had a massive bowl of water and some chicken I was doing for a roast and is currently snoozing away! Little pup was most perplexed, had a sniff and bounce then retreated to his bed, too!

What do I do now?? Will there be anyone about now to check for a chip so I can reunite dog with most likely worried sick owner? Shall I go out walking again? Good lord I only went out for spuds.

Emergency vet? Dog warden won't be available at this hour. I nearly ran after a beautiful springer puppy who was running all over an A road - the warden wouldn't even take calls despite being in at the time. Angry

Millicano · 03/12/2011 20:44

oh how lovely.

A dog is for life, not just for christmas, so I think you have to keep him! Grin

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 03/12/2011 20:50

I would call the non emergency police number and ask advice but keep him until the owner is found if you can.

Dh went for a chippy once and came home with a doberman...

SantasNutellaFairy · 03/12/2011 20:51

take it to a local vet. If they have a chip it will be easy to find the owner

Inthepotty · 03/12/2011 20:52

I'm sure she's (i think!) is a much loved pet- fab glossy coat, healthy l teeth lovely leather collar, friendly and pretty well trained!

Phone local vets and non emergancy police number to ask if a dog has been reported missing.

Onlyaphase · 03/12/2011 21:09

Check on Doglost.co.uk to see if anyone has posted about your new dog, and you could even register a found dog here if you wanted to

LordOfTheFlies · 03/12/2011 21:12

Do you have a PDSA or RSPCA near you. I'd imagine they would have 24 hour opening for emergencies, even if just to ask advice.
As you say, someone is most likely looking for her.

notjustme · 03/12/2011 21:12

Not a lot you can do at this time of night apart from try the emergency vet but to be honest I would hang on until morning, as he's healthy and safe with you. Dog warden won't be around till Monday now I guess, though it's worth checking!

Inthepotty · 03/12/2011 21:16

Have spoken to RSPCA and to non emergency police, RSPCA hadn't heard anything, police said they hadn't and gave me number for dog warden-straight to voicemail. Am about to ring local dog walking fella, see if he's any clue.

Do you have a rescue near you? I only ask as my friends 2 dogs went awol while out with her H (notice no Darling/Dear) and we were all out looking in the millions of acres around where we live and someone had found them and taken them to local rescue.

I think your nearest vet is best bet for microchip checking.

Hope it finds its owner soon.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/12/2011 23:12

I wouldnt bother with your dog warden.

bentneckwine1 · 03/12/2011 23:16

Local radio station might put out an appeal from you....or have already received a request from the owner.

Good Luck!

Bossybritches22 · 03/12/2011 23:19

If no news by late tomorrow & no chip at the vets, why not do some simple posters saying "dog found" & your number.Put them on that dog-walk you referred to & on a few lamposts/trees.

Don't give too much description or you could be handing the poor animal over to some toe-rag who'll sell him on!

My vet always has a reciprocal arrangement with fellow vets in the area to exchange info like this, an un-official network.

Hope he finds his owner!

Hurrah hurrah! Early this morning let stray pooch out for a wee, my neighbour stuck his head over the fence and said 'Erm, u do realise U seem to have the post office dog in your garden?!"

Turns out she'd bolted whilst out running and they'd been looking all night, cue me appearing at thier door and an emotional reunion!! Ahhhh a happy ending...

Small pup seems to be in a big strop with me, taking away his play mate!

Xmas Grin Erm, u do realise U seem to have the post office dog in your garden

So terribly British. No "DOGNAPPER! THAT'S the Post Office Dog"

Just a polite enquiry to check you knew you had the dog.

Inthepotty · 05/12/2011 15:05

Honeydragon my neighbours are v v polite!

Even better was this from my DH..
