Dog biting her nails

My 3yr old terrier/collie x has developed this habit of chewing her claws. It's like she's biting her nails, the noise of it really sets my teeth on edge too! She's clearly doing it out of boredom but I've just given her a bit of wood to chew on, which she loves, and has demolished, and had gone straight back to claw biting.
She doesn't know what to do with hide chews and usually tries to bury them in the garden, otherwise they just get left. She likes softer chews but they disappear in moments.
Is she doing herself any harm do you think?

It is not uncommon for collies (and crosses) to develop neurotic habits when bored. I think she probably needs more exercise and brain work - lots of running, training games, agility or fly ball. They need a surprising amount of exercise - mine have a minimum of 6 miles walking, half an hour chasing the ball, a training session and they live out during the day.

Will she play fetch? The plastic ball throwers are good as you can throw the ball a long distance and really tire the dog out.

You need to address this as once they start a funny habit it is very hard to break, and she may move onto chewing her paws. I had one chew the end of his tail when he was in kennels.

Anti chew spray on her paws might help too.

Yes she does love her exercise and we do a lot of throwing the ball up the stairs for her to chase up and down. She also gets 3 walks a day and sometimes day long rambles and comes to work with me (outdoors, sometimes with other dogs) once or twice a week. She fetches like mad except doesn't bring it back but runs round and round the field with the ball, bit of a bonus really.
She does have a lovely habit of cutching up with her 'blankie' (an old velour dressing gown she has adopted) and gently sucking a corner of it in a reverie after mealtimes. Aw.
Brain work, yes that would help. I'm giving her bits of kindling to chew and my carpet looks like an explosion in a matchstick factory most days.
