The doghouse

Crying in pain.

My 3 year old Minature Schnauzer (Pip) keeps crying out in pain when he is picked up or playing. It seems like the back hip area is causing the problem.

I took him to the vets, who gave him a thorough check up and manipulated his joints all over the place and not a peep from the dog!

We came home and I picked him up to take him from the car to the house and again crying and yelping in pain.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?

You know your dog better than the vet, so if you think he is in pain, he probably is. Try to work out which area is painful from where you are holding him when he cries, then take him back to the vet, perhaps a different one, and be really pushy.

My dog perforated his soft palate recently, and was obviously in great discomfort. I did not see the accident, so was unsure what the problem was, and the vet could not find an injury. My friend was with me, and she insisted on prodding round the dog's mouth a throat, and located the painful area almost immediately. The injury was located and treated under sedation.

Vets make mistakes. They have a 10 minute slot to assess an animal they do not know well and which may not be reacting typically as it is under stress.

Thank you Scrappy,

I hope your dog made a full recovery. Pip is still not right so back to the vets it is, I hope they can help him today he looks so miserable.Sad

Good luck. I hope they find the problem and sort him out. It is so worrying isn't it. If only pets could talk.

My boy is fine now thank you. It was a really painful injury, but luckily one that heals quite quickly.

Ask the vet to check his anal glands.

Well we went back to the vets and he prodded and poked a bit more and got a reaction. He dd an x-ray but it looks ok, there is one area on his back bone that may or may not be a problem so he is on anti inflammatory tablets and had an injection.

He seems much better and happier todayGrin

I hope that this is the end of it as the vet said the next stop would be a CT scan at the universityShock
