7 month old puppy won't come when called all of a sudden, what to do?

I suspect he's being a teenager, but it's becoming very difficult going for walks as he just ignores me. This time last week he was his usual biddable self. I don't know what to do for the best in the short term or the long term. If I keep calling him and letting him ignor me then surely I'm teaching him that he doesn't have to do as I ask.

Please help.

Oh and he's a Lurcher, so loves to run so I don't think putting him on a long line is going to work.

Is he food motivated? Would he come back for yummy treats?

I'm a dog novice, and on here to learn from others if I'm honest, but one thing that works for me with my stroppy minded dog is to turn round and run away waving my arms, singing loudly, doing telephone impressions, whatever really. My dog can't resist, and runs after me. Then I praise him.

My other (brighter) dog will always come back if I've kept him engaged, by periodically doing fun things like throwing a ball, or hiding a toy, as we walk. He keeps one eye out for promising activity and will rush back.

I tried and failed with treats, as mine have learned to watch my pockets.... no treats, no chance! If you forget to take some you're scuppered.

I have been carrying treats, he was fab and came immediately now he looks at me the same way my 12 year old dd does. If he could roll his eyes he would.

I'd go back to basics with training. Do lots of recalls on a long lead, with treats and tons of praise when he comes back, really OTT (even if you feel like a loon doing it). Then off lead, gradually building up the distances.

My 6.5 month old springer has been exactly like you describe this week! This time last week he was coming back like a rocket when I whistled or called. Now he comes if he wants to! Adolescence I suppose. Thinking of booking his castration next week. But will also up the training somehow.

Mine has been neutered already. I'm going to up the ante on the quality of treats, he's a bit meh about the shop bout ones, but likes cheese, sausage and chicken.

Was thinking about clicker training, not sure if this might complicate things.

We've just started clicker training this week. Wish I'd started it from the beginning. Some people on here have said not to use it for recall, but Karen Pryor (who seems to be clicker guru) recommends it in her book, so I'm thinking about it. Got to do something. Walks were a pleasure - now they're a bit nerve wracking!

Hmm my 7 month old small lurcher has always had a bit of a problem with this, he's ok until he sees another dog then he thinks it's playtime and if he had the chance would be off.
I keep him on a long line, so if he goes I can get him back, if no other dogs are around I let him go so he can run, but walks are a bit fraught because you never know when another dog will appear.
Perhaps I should also look at clicker training.
