Should I wait for my male pup to cock his leg before he is castrated?

Jasper is 5 months now, and I'm planning on having him neutered after Christmas. Should I wait until he's cocking his leg? Or does it not matter much?

My cocker spaniel didn't start cocking his leg until he was about 6 years old!!!! Dont ask me y!!
he got done at 6 months regardless...

You will get many different views on this, if you ask 6 people you will get 6 views Grin

I always leave it as long as possible before I get my dogs castrated (but I always do get it done!). I like to wait until after about 14 months IF there is no reason to do so before that. It gives the dog time to develop physically and mentally and a dog is beginning to finish its final fear stage at that point.

However one of my boys was castrated earlier as he was marking everything that stood still even the vet when discussing if this was the right time to have him done!

So the best time is the right time for your boy and only you with your vet can really decide when that is.

Sorry not very useful answer!

PS some male dogs never cock their leg so I do not think this is a proven indicator although one which is often used.

Oh. I'm keen to have him done asap to ensure he doesn't try and leg it, tbh. My friend's uncastrated JRT kept escaping her garden searching for laydees. He ended up getting in to a nasty fight :( Plus I let Jas off lead a lot, and I suppose I'm worried he might catch a bitch's scent and thunder off in to the horizon. Oh, and the lady I am boarding him with obviously finds it more difficult to cater for unneutered dogs (the dogs stay in her home). Would I be doing him harm having him castrated at 6 months?

Not all dogs will go chasing after the bitches. Some do with a passion, others can take it or leave it. If he is not showing a huge interest I personally would wait a bit. However many dogs are castrated at 6 months.

Take advice from your vet.

My lab was done at 11 months and he still dont cock his leg much now, too much like hard work for him ha ha .

He is 17 months now.

My JRT Buster is now 18 months old and he hasn't be done yet and he doesn't leg it after females either...he does escape from the garden given a chance but just sits on the front doorstep barking at people walking past Sad

I recently had our 6mo BC done, he doesn't cock his leg to pee (but our female terrier X does??). He hadn't tried to chase any ladies that I know of, but was humping madly in the house and I think he climaxed on my carpet so I felt we would get on with it.

Ours is 6 months and we're booking him in next week. Vet recommended this, so we thought we'd go with the advice. Although not using it as an indicator, has just started cocking his leg this week . He is just beginning to show a bit of teenage attitude. Ignored me calling him on a walk today for the first time ever!
