fits and now paralysis of one back leg (Basset Hound)

I'm really worried about my ten year old Basset Hound, he has had occasional fits now for 4 mths (every 8 weeks or thereabouts). This morning when I came downstairs he was really subdued and a bit wobbly, I thought he'd had another seizure but there were no signs of this (slobber, faeces etc). He disappeared up to our room (he never goes in there) and snapped at me when I tried to touch him (unheard of). Took him to the vet and whilst he was there he lots the use of his back right leg. Vet has referred for an emergency MRI scan in Birmingham tomorrow, dog is at home but very subdued and wants to be left alone in a quiet place. He won't eat or drink.

I'm really worried, anyone had this with their dog? Could it be a tumour?

Oh, poor you, and your poor dog. Wish I had some useful advice - nothing's more heartbreaking than a sick Basset. Fingers crossed the MRI scan reveals what's up and that the vet can help. Can you tempt him with any chicken in the meantime?

Restrainedrabbit · 27/11/2011 19:23

I've given him some chicken and rice and he managed to drag himslf under the baby's highchair and snaffle some muffin that she dropped Hmm he's now sleeping, will stay with him tonight and fingers crossed he stays stable :(

Oh bless, Your poor old dog, no wonder you are worried. I'm sure you already know it could be a tumour, sorry. I hope the diagnosis is more positive though.

He's a lovely old boy. Where there's snaffled muffin there's hope...

Restrainedrabbit · 27/11/2011 21:06

Yes it's typical Basset behaviour, think of your stomach even when at deaths door Wink

What did the MRI scan show? Have been hoping the vet had better news...

Restrainedrabbit · 28/11/2011 22:25

Scan showed nothing sinister in brain so fits are a separate issue and probably late onset epilepsy. Back scan showed two slipped discs close to each other. Suggested four weeks of crate confinement to see whether that helps to solve the problem alternative is highly expensive spinal surgery.

I hope he gets better.
he is lovely and he looks like a male version of my bassett. Can I ask did he ever do a gay little hop with his back leg? Mine flicks her back leg out and will sometimes limp until I tell her not to. She is 8-9 years old

wildfig · 29/11/2011 10:14

Hope the crate rest sorts him out - poor chap. Sending you both lots of slobbery sympathy.

our dog has had 2 separate occurrances of hind leg paralysis which have sorted themselves out with rest. 1st occasion was around 3 days poorly then 4 weeks complete rest. 2nd was 8 hours and then tired 1 day then fine.
all mysterious. 1st time were getting mri but then he started to be ble to move so no longer emergency and insurers wouldn't approve. 2nd time was not allowed to investigate as it had happened before. suspected slipped disks or genetic issue (just him, not breed)

good luck rest does help
