Puppy is playing with our big dog but nipping at him. What can I do?

I am pretty sure it is just play. No growling or anything. But when they play and are chasing etc the puppy jumps up or tries to grab at big dogs back kegs.
Our old English is so lovely he is putting up with it. How can I stop him doing it?
Apart from big dog not having to put up with it I don't want him doing it with dogs he meets.

Hi Pag, dogs quite often sort this out between themselves. Your big dog will get fed up with up and let pup know. Meantime if you need to intervene, make a fuss of big dog when it happens and ignore pup (bit like toddlers who hit/ bite Grin)

What kind of dog is little dog?

LadyDamerel · 25/11/2011 22:33

Our pup did this. She probably spent at least the first 4 months hanging off our older dog's neck. If the older one got fed up she'd just give her a warning growl or nip back and the puppy got the message.

TBH, it was much easier for us and the dcs because the puppy got rid of all her nipping/chewing urges without using any of us as a chew toy.

She didn't do it to any other dogs though - it seemed to be more a mother/pup thing.

Pagwatch, I agree with Jooly. Try to ignore and hope that big dog puts pup in his place, or if you think big dog won't (some don't) just push them apart and give big dog lots of fuss.

We do this when we are pack walking (friends and I = 12 dogs!) We have 2 new pups in the group and they are both nippy. We just push the pup out the way or distract it and make sure the big dogs get praised. 2 of the older dogs are unflappable and soft and the pups seem to sense this. They wouldn't dream of hanging off a couple of the others - they'd be eaten!

Oh good, I have pretty much been doing what you say - moving between them and giving big dog lots of attention whilst ignoring puppy. Big dog is so lovely he just tries to move away but won't growl or snap.

Pup is a bischon frise jooly - so a bit chippy and trying to assert himself I think Grin

I'll keep doing that. Thank you
