Hi, we are thinking about getting a ckcs puppy next year. Me and dh have 2 dd's who are 4 and 6 at the moment....we have an old 3 legged cat too! I have been researching the right breed of dog for our family and thought this type may be the one for us. There is generally always someone home and we do a walk to school twice a day. I also understand they can have heart problems so we'd need to get a pup from parents that have had screens?

From your experiences do ckcs's make good family pets....are they destructive as puppies???
Any info gratefully received!

My parents have had them for 25 years. Theyve all been completely different. They had one who trashed the house (out of 7 so not bad odds ) but was the most laid back adult dog.
5/7 had heart problems but the last one wasn't the usual problems.

They are usually v good with children, like a good walk but don't need it daily like some other breeds. On a normal day my Dad does about 20 mins twice a day and a longer walk once -twice a week. That's a 2 year old dog & retired parents though!

Great family pet, mine thinks she's human and is obsessed with food. Dmil accidently left a huge bag of food in reach and she nearly demolished the bag but I never have to hoover crumbs or scraps of food that fall on the floor. Also the only dog I've ever known to watch TV, she barks at any animal that appears. She has a heart murmer but it doesn't affect her. Also as a lapdog, good for warming the legs on a cold evening.

My Bil has one. You are right about the heart problems. He currently shells out £127 per month for medication. Aside from that it barks constantly. It's is a lot louder than my boxer dog. He is a handful on the lead and does not come back when off the lead. That said i believe that it's a training issue and not the breed.

I've got two Smile absolutely fantastic dogs. I've also got a cat (he was here first) Sam is 9, and Baxter is 7. They're brilliant with the dc's (I have a 5 year old, 2 year old and 9 months).

I've always had dogs as I was growing up and as an adult. Dh too. We knew we wanted a family, and thought a great deal about which dogs to get too. But I must admit I've always loved spaniels, although I've never had one. Dh has had Clumbers and springers, much harder work according to him.

They were easier as puppies than others I've had, but I'm not sure if that's because of the breed, or we were just lucky.

I'd definitely recommend them as family dogs though. Nearly broke my heart a few months ago, as we were considering rehoming them due to ds2's health.

Hope all goes well whichever doggies you go for Smile

I have one and she is fantastic. Like any dog they need training or they will play up. They are so affectionate and really good with children. Ours does chase our cats but it is to play not to catch. I would recommend them as long as you have researched the breed and are willing to accept the health problems they can come with. Let us know if you get one.
