Dog pissing in conservatory

Svrider · 22/11/2011 21:54

My dog is 5yrs old, and sleeps next to the radiator in the conservatory. He pisses in there every nite. I bleach and disinfect it every day, but last nite my dh caught him pissing up the wall within 10 mins of been let in!
I mean wtf
My mates say I should have him castrated (dog not dh) but this seems a bit extreme as though he is rather boisterous he's never been aggressive at all

having him castrated wont stop him peeing up against the wall.

Is this a recent thing? Or has it been going on 5 years?

Svrider · 22/11/2011 22:04

Rather embarrassingly on and off for 5 yrs! We now don't use conservatory for anything other than dog. Usually does it say once per week, and I've put it down to him not been able to hold on all nite. My dh tends to stay up to late to let him out, then we let him out early in the morning.

Don't use bleach as it cleans it for you but leaves a rather nice smell that encourages your dog to pee again on! Diluted bio washing liquid or any enzyme based product sold to remove urine. Full supervision for peeing in garden, dogs nip out to pee and get caught up doing other stuff, sniffing, digging, barking etc. Nice walk before bedtime so he can pee up against every single lampost in the neighbourhood. Castration won't help at all, he will be relieved to hear!

As multipoodles says - bleach and disinfectant make a smell which encourages dogs to pee there.

I'd disinfect to kill germs and then use either a solution of bio washing powder, or a specialist cleaner. In your situation, I'd give the entire place a good scrub down with specialist cleaner and start again.

He also needs a quick check up by the vet to eliminate any problem with his health as a cause of the problem. A healthy, young adult dog should easily be able to last all night without needing a wee.

I think you need to get a vet to check him over. Like others have said at 5 he should be able to hold all night.

Can you shut off the conservatory to him so that he doesnt go and pee there and see how things are for a couple of weeks. Maybe a large crate for overnightto break the habit.

Thanks guys
I'll try the deep clean this weekend, and spend money that I was going to spend on castration on a full check up for him
