You know, that thing that dogs do when they tear around the house bouncing off the sofas/walls. Because Jasper does this once every other day, and while the running like a loon thing can be funny, the jumping up and chewing the DC isn't. At the moment, I am grabbing his collar, making a sort of 'Nnnggghhhhhh!' noise at him and putting him out in the garden until he calms down. But I really need to stop the jumping up and snapping/chewing at the children, because they are beginning to get frightened of him. Any tips?

What about clicker training- Something to distract him and give some focus when he's hyper. Is he getting a lot of good exercise?

Sometimes puppies just have the zoomies run around madly and then crash out.

However what you are describing sounds like a very overtired pup. So remove the pup quietly, say nothing and crate or put in bed for a while. When the pup is quiet click and treat for good "settle"

Soon settle becomes a command to go and chill on his own for a while.

Often they do it at the same time every day so you can preempt it by a game before hand and then encourage the settle before the mad puppy crazy half hour starts.

We "accidently" taught ours a command after shouting ENOUGH very loudly. I think the loudness and pitch of my voice probably caused ALL dogs in a 5 mile radius to stop what they were doing, but I had a large very hot casserole dish in my hands as I walked into the room she was doing it in, and I think my fear of being bowled over made my voice shoot up several octaves Grin

I can now get away with using the word on a more normal level, but still with a lot of emphasis.

Thanks everyone. When he started getting a bit nutso earlier I took hold of his collar and put him outside until he'd stopped dashing about, then led him to his crate with a chew. He was asleep within minutes
