Jasper is 20 weeks old now, so 5 months(ish). He does ask to go out for a wee most of the time, and is always given a small treat for performing outdoors. Indoor messes are just cleaned up without comment. So far, so good, right? Except sometimes he will ask to go out, run around a bit, do bugger all and come back in. And then will piss spectacularly on the floor. Tonight he christened my rug. He has crossed A Line. So, how do I get him to only go outside, and stop randomly peeing by the back door or on my rug when he has just been let out? If it helps, he's 3/4 cocker/1/4 springer.

Firstly, make sure you use something like Simple Solution to clean up after him, then he won't smell it for another time. Do you go out with him? Our youngest now pretty much responds to a command to do his stuff if he needs to. If your rug is in a place slightly out of the way that he thinks no-one goes very much, it might make him feel as though it's ok to pee on it. Is he neutered yet? He might be marking his territory. Bloody dogs. I hope someone who knows comes along soon. How horrid for you. One of ours peed all over the house when he first arrived with us. It was disgusting. If you catch him in the act, you have time to be cross with him. Something to break his concentration might help, like a water pistol. I would probably take a dog out on a lead until they have done what they need to do, then give them a treat.

DonkeyTeapot · 20/11/2011 22:18

Agreed, if you catch him, shout at him and immediately get him outside. Ours get told to "do a wee" but one of them needs reminding as she sort of forgets why she's gone outside.

Yawner247 · 20/11/2011 22:23

We have the toilet command of quick quick as we let our cocker out it works a treat Grin agree with the others,..if he's in the act get cross and get him out saying your toilet command!

kid · 20/11/2011 22:29

I taught my dog a command to go to the toilet. I tell him 'go toilet' and he will do a wee. If I say 'quick quick' he will do a poo! Its not always the case but it works most of the time Grin

I used diluted biological powder to wash anywhere that he weed on. I also let him in the garden a lot and let him have a sniff about but wouldn't talk to him or play. I'd fuss him lots when he did go toilet and it seems to have worked well. He is 17 months old now and sniffs at the door to tell us he wants to go out.

Good luck with your pup, it takes time but you'll get there soon.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 20/11/2011 22:34

I say 'wee wee' when I let him out, and he often will go. Then I say 'good wee wee!' like an excitable 5 yr old and give him a treat. I'm using the bio spray to clean up inside wees. I've been ignoring inside accidents, should I be getting cross? He does often come and stare at me then lead me to the door like a rubbish Lassie, but sometimes I think he just wants a doorman so he can go out to eat leaves. I'm not convinced he asks to go out because he needs to go and wee, iyswim. Interestingly, he is insistant on going out if he needs to poo. He will scratch at the door and everything.

I think its okay to shout 'no' if you catch him mid-stream and then take him straight outside. I did that and it worked for us and my dog isn't a nervous, traumatised dog.

There is no point in telling a dog off for something it did earlier as they won't have a clue what they are in trouble for.

He is probably just curious and wants to get outside and have a sniff and a nose around. Wonder if he will be so keen if it snows!

minimuu · 21/11/2011 08:26

Please never ever ever ever be cross with a dog for weeing inside (unless you want a confused dog that will wee inside but go off and do it where you can not see them Grin)

Your pup is just a bit confused. It is unlikely that he will ask to go out so you need to take him yourself for a while yet. However what he will learn is to hold on until you take him out.

Go back to basics. Do contine to use a command for weeing.

Take him outside regularly (you may be able to see a pattern to his weeing) but definitely when he wakes up after food etc. When he wees in he correct place give a fantastic treat and maybe a game if he is toy orientated.

If he does not wee and you are sure he needs it stay outside be very boring and ignore him but the second he doe wee become excited, play and treat etc.

He will get there. Often puppies that were trained in the summer seem to understand toilet training but when the winter comes and the doors are shut they actually show us that they only got some of the weeing outside idea!

PurpleFrog · 21/11/2011 13:06

Chickens - did you use puppy pads to start with ? I just wondered because we did and one consequence was that he seemed to think for a few months after we stopped using them that any large flat object on the floor was OK to wee on! We still haven't got round to replacing the back doormat. Sigh!

Treats were the way to go with our lab. He was a June puppy and we definitely haven't had any accidents indoors since Christmas (so none since he was 6.5 months old). You will probably find that he gets there very soon.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 21/11/2011 13:24

No, never used pads. I've brought out the big guns...tiny pieces of pepperami
