Elbow Dysplasia

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 16/11/2011 21:11

I have an 8 month old golden retriever puppy and he's been walking with a limp for the last week. We took him to the vet and they think he has a problem with one of his elbows.
They mentioned elbow dysplasia and a couple of other things I can't quite remember. He has to go back to the vet next week for a ga and for x rays to be carried out.

I am worried about him. Does anyone have any experience of this and what does it mean for his quality of life.......?

He was on Metacam and whilst this didn't upset his tummy it didn't improve his limp. So they moved him onto Previcox, and then it started.

He't not eaten anything today and is just sleeping. I took him to the vet again earlier and he was sick in the car on the way there and back and did a poo in the surgery Blush. Vet worried as it was black which is a sign of more blood.

He's had another 2 injections tonight and he's got to go back tomorrow again to be checked and more injections as they don't want to give him anything oral just now. If he's still bad they might keep him in and do more tests.

Poor boy, he's feeling very sorry for himself.

Another interesting few days. Took Zac back to the vet on Friday night and got more injections and tablets. Overnight on Friday he was sick quite a bit and 3 more times this morning.
Took him back to the vet where he was again sick all over the waiting room floor and then just laying down with no interest in anything.

They've now admitted him and have him on a fluid drip to try and help his hydration while they look into what else is going on. He's getting stomach x rays this afternoon. Sad

Oh no, that's awful, you poor poor thing. Sending huge (((hugs))) and cuddles for Zac.

Hopefully this is just a temporary setback. I'll be thinking of you.xxx

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 26/11/2011 21:29

Whoops. The hugs were for you, though I think you probably need Wine more.

daisydotandgertie · 26/11/2011 21:44

Oh - poor both of you. What an awful time you're having.

What did they find on x-ray?

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 27/11/2011 15:38

Hi all,

Vet called this morning to say he took the x rays without having to give him a GA as he was so lethargic but they couldn't see anything on the x ray. He was on a drip all day and was sick again late last night so they were keeping him in today. He's had a little food this morning and we're waiting to hear how he's doing. If he's sick again the vet said they will be taking a barium x ray to see if they can see anything else Confused.

House seems very empty without him and the vet said he was so friendly to them all at the surgery and just wanted claps.

It sounds as though they're expecting to find a blockage, tbh.

At least you know he's in the very best place at the moment; and getting as much care as he needs.

Poor boy.

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 27/11/2011 21:00

Thierry - just a thought - do you feed the birds in your garden?

My bitch had similar last year when she found the suet pellets I put out for the birds and snarfed a whole kilo in one go.

We didn't realise what she had done at first. It didn't show up on xrays or on a barium x ray and I was really really worried.

Probably isn't the same, but just a thought. Thinking of you.xx

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 27/11/2011 21:07

Mrs D, no nothing like that. The vet phoned around an hour ago and said that the food that they had given him this morning came back up around 3.00. He's had a barium x ray and they can't see anything but if he shows no sign of being able to keep food down tomorrow then they'll open him up to have a look Sad.
Vet says he's being such a good boy, and is laying down for the x rays every time without any fuss.

Oh no Thierry, that's such awful news. Sad

Poor Zac. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way xxx At least you sound like you have a really good (and kind) vet.

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 28/11/2011 10:52

Just checking in to see how Zac is today. Hope the news is better. xx

daisydotandgertie · 28/11/2011 11:58

Although an op is worrying it will at least eliminate all doubt.

I very nearly lost one of my girls to a blockage this year and it was only the very, very thorough manual checking of every inch of her insides which saved her. We didn't have time to do a barium xray or anything. We went straight to an operation and in our case, I'm glad we did. Any longer and her intestines would have burst Sad.

PM me if you want any details/help etc. We learned a lot. Both blockages had been inside her for some time - the first for maybe 2 weeks and the second for much longer than that. I certainly had no idea she'd eaten anything dodgy.

Never had any personal experience with either HD or ED, however ,aren't hips scored completely differently to elbows? hips score can be anything in the range 0-53 on one hip, elbow 0-3, so elbow score is much trickier to interpret...

here is a leaflet about the ED and scoring scheme

If it hasn't been said before, if you possibly can avoid any jumping especially down (down the stairs, out of the car).

Go on www.labradorforums.co.uk/ - they have a great section on Health and great posters with personal and professional experiences on the condition...

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 29/11/2011 08:18

Bumping to see how Zac is doing today, sending hopeful vibes to you Thierry.

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 29/11/2011 20:24

Well my boy is home Smile.

They're not sure what the cause of the sickness was but he managed to keep food down last night and during today so my husband picked him up around 6.00 this evening. It's so nice having him home even though he looks a lot lighter than before he went in.
The vet was slightly worried as he hadn't poo'd since Tuesday but within 10 minutes of being home he went, I wonder if he's going to be one of these folk who can't poo when they go on holiday Grin.
We've got monitor what how he is tomorrow and I've got to take him back on Wednesday for a check up. Hopefully he's over he worst and it's just the ED to worry about.

Thanks for all your thoughts and hugs, we both appreciated them.
x

Good to hear! Smile

So glad he is home and doing OK, sending him a big hug.

Hopefully our story will cheer you up a bit Thierry. Our Lab was 2 when we took her on from a rescue. We were out walking one day when she stumbled and was suddenly in awful pain. To cut a long story short, it transpired that a large flap of cartilage had separated. She was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia and ended up having the flap removed via arthroscopic surgery. Her other elbow also became affected, though not as badly, and she didnt need any surgery.

Here's the bit that might cheer you up: she is now 9 and a half. She is happy, brilliant company and her discomfort is minimal, even now she is an old lady. When she was young, I always thought that her elbows would have an enormous impact on both the quality and length of her life. But with care and good treatment, here she is as an older lady.

Things that might help/have helped include:

Hydrotherapy: wonderful and the thing that has helped her most. She only swims for 6 minute with a rest in the middle, then a jacuzzi, and thats been plenty long enough for her.

Pain relief: Metacam has worked for us (with regular blood tests of course), but if its not right for you, am sure there are many others to try.

Supplements: salmon oil, glucosamine and chondroitin, green lipped mussel, turmeric, boswellia, cod liver oil (and probably loads more I cant think of).

Good quality food with joint supplements in it.

Exercise: nice steady walks rather than frantic running around, being a bit more sensible in the cold and damp. Not throwing things for her - the sudden starts and stops make her worse. Getting her warm and dry when we come in. Not swimming in cold water in the winter.

Acupuncture: made a surprisingly big difference, and she didnt mind it at all.

Am sure there are lots of other things, and of course every dog is different, but I can remember being where you are now and how horrible it is. Here we are over 7 years later and its been much better than we dreaded.

All the best Smile

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 29/11/2011 20:50

Hurray! Great news that he is home and feeling a bit better. At least you don't need to worry about his weight any more Smile.

ThierryHenryismyBoyfriend · 29/11/2011 21:04

Thanks for the advice Folly, it's good to hear others who have been in the same situation as we're in and that life is still good.

I'm going to try an upload a photo of my boy so you can see who is causing me all the heartache just now!
