Example, if i we got him insured today, could i go to the vet tomorrow and if say he was found with something seroius would i be covered ASAP?

The dog is 17 months. I know it varies from different policies just wondered how it works really

Thanks :-)

No - not today. There's a 14 day exclusion from the start of a policy.

Have you got a problem with him?

MakeAnotherCuppa · 14/11/2011 07:53

thanks for quick reponce, yes i think i do, i WILL take him anyway but just thought i would see how insurance actually works first!

could kick myself for not getting him insured sooner

It's worth bearing in mind that whatever you take him to the vet about will be excluded - along with any complications it creates - from any insurance policy. And that can be really far reaching.

They classify illnesses that occur during the 14 day exclusion as pre-existing.

What's up with him?

Be careful with this - we took our pup to the vets for his booking in appt when he was still covered by the two free weeks insurance from the breeder. Like about 99 percent of pups he had some runny poos when he came home. We then took out proper insurance to start the day our freebie ended.
One year and £1k worth of vets bills later due to complex gastric probs/dietary intolerances, our insurers were refusing to pay up due to it being a 'pre-existing condition', which was an astonishing degree of fuckwittage, even for an insurance co.
fortunatley my vet is a legend and told them not to be such twats, and they not only paid up but continued to cover him, but we could!ve ended up with a very very expensive problem otherwise. So make sure nothing goes in your dog's notes that could invalidate a policy, as you will have to send complete history for any claims.

He has a Lump on his belly that i found last night, Its quite soft and spongy although its quite big and deep, i would say it was the size of a large grape, right in middle.

Could it just be Cyst? Im quite worried

daisydotandgertie · 14/11/2011 08:14

Is it moveable or fixed?

MakeAnotherCuppa · 14/11/2011 08:16

Fixed

OP posts:
MakeAnotherCuppa · 14/11/2011 08:19

Is that more or less worrying?

If it's where his belly button is, then it's probably an umbilical hernia. This may not be covered on your insurance, no matter when you take him to your vet, as it's something he was born with.

MakeAnotherCuppa · 14/11/2011 08:35

thankyou! i have just googled that on pictures and looks the same, i'll give the vet a call

It does sound as though that's what it might be. One of mine had one which they removed when they spayed her. It didn't cause mine any problems.

Good luck!

SouthernandCross · 14/11/2011 08:56

Sorry, was rushing off on school run and meant to say it shouldn't cause any problems at this age as it's probably just fat in there now. But you do need to keep an eye on them, and if they become bigger, hard or painful, then it could be an emergency as a if the hole is large enough ( And I'd bet money that your dog's isn't) a bit of gut can slip through and get twisted.
As another poster said, the best time to sort it out is during neutering, when the dog needs to have an anaesthetic anyhow. It will cost a bit extra for the surgical procedure and the extra anaesthetic time it takes, but it's def easier on both the dog and your wallet to have it done at the same time.

Thankyou both - i have called the vet and it'll be about £140 ish (if it is a hernia) He is already castrated but i do have a pet care plan at my vets so i already get 15% discount on any treatments that he may need so that'll be helpful :)

This may be a daft question but i'll still be ok walking him?? walking wont make it worse will it??

OP posts:
SouthernandCross · 14/11/2011 15:34

No walking won't make it worse, if it is a hernia. But if it's come up suddenly and you've not seen it before, then I'd have it looked at by a vet sooner than later
