ralph loves cuddly toys. but all the pet shop ones i've bought have been destroyed in 5mins. strangley if he gets hold of the kids soft toys they fare better and dont get detroyed (i can usually rescue them even after he has mauled them a bit)

he does not like balls, tug ropes etc. they dont interest him.

Get some charity shop soft toys. My dog thinks she's nicked them from the kids so is well chuffed.

Kayzr · 13/11/2011 08:43

I wouldn't get kids soft toys from a charity shop. How is the dog meant to know the difference between old ones he can play with and new ones the DCs love that he can't play with?

We get most of ours from the local pet shop and they seem to last quite long.

misdee · 13/11/2011 09:04

kayzr, as the kids toys end up on the floor the same as ralphs i guess he has a hard time twelling apart whats his and what isnt anyway [shrugs]

he can honestly destroy a dog soft toy (or a rubber one) in minutes. i 4refuse to get the rubbery ones now except kong types, as he is always eating them, as loves plastic things. with the soft toys he justchews them but doesnt eat them.

Be careful with soft toys that are not designed for children. Some have fire retardant material in them which expands inside the dogs stomachs if they swallow it. The dogs can need surgery or worse.

I don't give toys to my real chewers if they need to chew they get a bone! I know you raw feed Misdee so that should be ok for Ralph

minimuu · 13/11/2011 09:23

what! Be careful with soft toys that are not designed for children obviously should have meant not designed for Dogs. Off to have another coffee to wake up properlyBlush

MitziKinsky · 13/11/2011 09:33

Oh, I thought this was about toy dogs. Very Confused!

feesh · 13/11/2011 11:23

I have a similar dog - she loves plush/padded toys and rejects anything else apart from plastic bottles. We have just spent a fortune on toys from an American website (we live in the Middle East so it was just as easy to order in toys from the USA as it was from Britain). I don't know if they sell the same toys in the UK, but even if they don't it might be worth shipping them across - I don't know about you, but we were spending a small fortune on shop-bought toys!

The website is this: www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=320

She destroyed:

  • The Foxtail chaser
  • The Pogo Plush Racoon (although we let her keep it as there is no danger of her swallowing anything of what's left of it)
  • The Skineez Tons o Squeakers Rabbit (within seconds!)
  • The Skineez Big Bite Water Bottle Fox
  • The Toss n Treat (thoroughly disproving the theory behind this clever toy!)

She HASN'T destroyed (so far, lol!)

  • The Doggles Plush Pentas
  • The Fuzzees ball
  • The Go Dog Baby Dragon with Dog Guard
  • The Goughnuts ring
  • The Plubber Fox (she loves this)
  • The Tuffutt Black Bear Square (NB it leaves black fluff all over the house though)
  • The Tuffutt Long & Lovely Lambie (although she has managed to fashion a chinese style moustache out of his black fur...)
  • The Tuffutt Clyde the Bear, although I'm not sure if we've actually given it to her yet....
  • The Bunny Braided Fleece Tugs (although I suspect this won't last forever as a lot of fur has already come off it)

The only slight issue we've had is that in her mind, toys are for dissecting, and when she comes up against these tough toys, she isn't actually that interested in them because they are indestructible, so you might have the same problem. We've had to add value to them by pretending they are our toys and sometimes playing with them ourselves(!) and 'accidentally' leaving them around for her to find.

And the biggest lesson we've learned from all this after spending a small fortune on toys is that her favourite thing in the world is a pair of socks with knots tied in them - not completely indestructible, but very cheap to replace when she does rip them.......

My mums dog has so far not destroyed the JML crazy critters, he's had one for a year and it's still in one piece, one got pinched out their garden, he has destroyed everything else he's had!

misdee · 13/11/2011 11:50

He has bones, but sometimes he jst wants to anuggle and chew a soft toy. Will check out that big list of dog toys feesh.

I had a look at the jml skineez ones but wasant sure if it would be snuggly enough for him.

He does love soft fabrics and I often find him cuddling my hats or gloves :/

Hi, my Staffie is another destroyer of soft toys, we used to buy her them from charity shops, but I got fed up of stuffing scatered everywhere. I bought her one of the unstuffed furries (got it in Asda for her xmas pressie), she drags it around and shakes it, but, so far, she hasn't destroyed it, maybe because it is already unstuffed, so to speak. You could try that. Mind you, so far this month she has "modified" my wellies to a universal fit (only the sole intact!), 2 washing baskets "had it coming" and also her new comfy dog cushion was obvious too comfortable, and much better without the stuffing!
Life of living with a Staffie, but I love her and forgive most things!
One of our previous ones managed to destroy 2 sofas, so she it not nearly as bad as he wasGrin

bubby64 · 10/02/2012 19:45

Oh, by the way, her "furrie" lives in her bed when she is not dragging it about, and yes, she does cuddle it!Grin

friendlyfirefighter · 10/02/2012 19:46

A black kong :)

bubby64 · 10/02/2012 19:49

Last thing- the "stuffed" soft furry thing she does like to sleep with cuddling if she can, is our ginger cat! And he seems to enjoy it as well!!

Elibean · 10/02/2012 21:07

Mouse has failed to destroy a big cuddly Bumblebee - it is soft and furry on the outside (like a hot water bottle cover) but an oval shaped tough rubber toy on the inside, iyswim.

I got it from Pet Planet. Like an indestructible rugby ball with furry exterior and antennae you can carry it by Smile

Recommend it!

musicposy · 10/02/2012 23:37

I was going to ask about the JML crazy critters too. They look good and there is no stuffing to pull out. Pulling out stuffing is Poppy's favourite pastime, and once she knows something contains stuffing, she'll get it out no matter how well you sew the toy up. But the £9.99 price tag has stopped me so far too stingy to spend a tenner on the dog :)

musicposy · 10/02/2012 23:49

Poppy currently has this which my parents brought in for her because it was making their dog too vicious and crazy. She was scared of it at first but now she loves it - too much. We've had to ban her from taking it to bed because she just squeaks it (it quacks) over and over ad infinitum. She particularly likes to squeak it if I answer the phone. I suspect it sounds to the caller as though I have a particularly nasty bowel problem Blush

It can get a bit wearing (and I'm sure she thinks she is killing it which I am a bit Hmm about) but so far it has lasted nearly 2 weeks with no sign of wear. This is very good for her. Most soft toys are thrown out or being sewn up within a day.

BehindLockNumberNine · 11/02/2012 10:03

Elibean could you link to the Bumblebee please? I have searched but cannot find it. It sounds great!

Sam is loving his cuddely cow from the pets section of Sainsbury. It has a soft body made from various textures (along with some freaky udders Hmm) and rope arms and legs. Oh and it squeeks. He loves it and it has lasted him since Christmas although he has now managed to chew off one ear and split one seam (poor MollyMooCow)

misdee · 11/02/2012 16:09

cuddly santa and snowman from sainsburys have aurvived since xmas day. the oinking pig which was cool and he loved, lasted a week.

I'm rubbish at links, Beyond, but its a Kyjen 'Hard Boiled Softie' - Pet Planet don't seem to have them anymore, but Dogs & Co do. Try googling them.

Its still going strong and, added bonus (or not!) it does a deep squeak if bitten hard enough Smile
