Aww! I have a Labrador so he's seriously food motivated but when I was talking to the vet she suggested using a specific toy for training such as something really squeaky that he doesn't normally play with that would get him really excited. I've not actually needed to try this myself but I thought I'd suggest something until someone more experienced comes along!

Oh and we didn't give treats for toilet training, just got really excited and fussing him telling him he's a good boy!

Keep trying different treats! All dogs are different, maybe she has refined tastes! (Not that I'm suggesting your treats are crap Wink )

Smile I have a Labrador so eating have never been a problem. The problem is she never wants to stop eating lol Wink

the ones i tried were all brand ones, not cheapy ones, she seams to like cocktail sausages so i have been breaking a little tiny bit of and giving her that,

and making loads of fuss too,

she is doing really well, so far :)

test of today is leaving her alone while i take my cocker to the vet.

thank you everyone i will put some pics up later too, she is soooo ickle x

I must have been really mean because our puppy only got kibble as 'treats'! We hand fed him all his food at first, measured out at the beginning of the day and dished out as rewards for everything. (Ian Dunbar suggests this as a way to developrhe love of kibble!). After a few days, some of his food was from kongs.

I've had to stop the dry kibble now (6 months) as he needs all his food soaking (gets the runs otherwise). Now his treats are tiny pieces of popcorn. My friend's dog doesn't even bother asking me for a treat now as he thinks they're rubbish. Looks at my pup as if he's an idiot! Maybe he is unusual after all for liking boring stuff.

We tried giving food teats for going outside too - but
a. the clever little monster darling started holding back his wee and going 3 times for 3 treats!!! and
b. goes to poop after being fed, so is not hungry for food based treats.

Now use lots of fuss instead - still works....

Use cheese, bits of apple, carrot, chicken, hotdogs, anything rolled in Parmesan. Much more yummy, cheaper and no yucky additives that will be found in the shop bought treats.

(well some in the hotdogs but dogs love emm!)

gothicangel · 11/11/2011 19:13

thank you minimuu, ive been giving her a kong with a little peanut butter in it, my cocker loves cheese will try her with that,

im going to make some doggie biccys at the weekend so will see if they both like those too, :)

The only bought treat my dog likes is Schmackos - I think they are canine smack actually! He'd rather eat his normal dry food than most of the others
