12 week old puppy at night time

We have had our wonderful puppy for almost two weeks now; we picked him up from a rescue center so that makes him that extra bit special in every way!

He is doing fantastically well and has not had an accident indoors for 3 days now. Walks beautifully on the lead, and already knows a few tricks and commands. I am really chuffed with him! He is showing no signs of separation anxiety whatsoever and seemed really chilled about leaving his litter mates from the very start.

The question I have is are we doing the right thing at night time? Currently my husband sleeps on the sofa and Niko is in a crate. DH sleeps downstairs so he can take him out during the night. For how long do we continue letting him out at night? At what stage will he be able to cope without a night time pee break?

I miss my DH at night quite frankly!

Thank you so much if you are able to give me some advice on this one!

Work out when he needs to go, go to bed set an alarm (hubby has his watch alarm near his pillow - wakes him, not me) then get up before he needs to go - set it a little later each night and you will soon be there - soon being a few weeks probably

  • just going through it ourselves (again).

We used to take UnWiseDog out at 11pm, 3am and 6am, again using an alarm to wake us. She slept much better without someone there to excite her too.

Thank you very much!
He seems to sleep through they night and my husband is setting the alarm and taking him out. He is tired though!

Mind you, he sheepishly admitted to me this morning that he slept through the alarm last night. But since he did not go to bed until 12 and I got up and let him out at 5.30 he seemed to be ok. No mad scrabbling to be let out the second he saw me, just carried on snoozing until I had put the kettle on and was ready. Is this ok?!

He really is very laid back and rather gorgeous!

Mine was about 12 weeks when I got him and after the first night he slept through all night. Maybe you should just try it. Last one to bed lets him out, then whenever you get up. We have a toddler so early mornings anyway. I was so delighted with the good nights, especially as dd hasn't been sleeping through for long!

belindarose · 09/11/2011 08:43

He sounds brilliant.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 09/11/2011 10:42

Ooh. I've never got up to Jasper in the night. I let him out before bed, then let him out in the morning. He is now 18 weeks old and 2 mornings out of 3 there are no puddles. I just assumed there would be accidents initially, so it hasn't bothered me mopping up iyswim.

louby86 · 09/11/2011 11:53

I never let Barney out during the night, was advised not too and like chickens to expect the mess but now I feel guilty! Although at 9 weeks old we weren't getting accidents overnight. I go to bed about 11 and my husband is up at 6 for work but he's always got in his crate and slept through

Rhinestone · 09/11/2011 11:59

I would also suggest you try leaving him to go all the way through now. At 12 weeks, he should be able to. The key is to let him out last thing.

Dogs have a denning instinct - it's quite possible he won't go in his crate now.

He sounds lovely!

Thank you so very much for all your advice! The next challenge is to persuade DH to join me in the bedroom as I have no heating on in there and I rather like sleeping with the window open. He is the complete opposite and like slumbering in a sauna...

The surprise of the day is that we just got back from the vets. We were told that he was an appenzeller/enterbuch mountain dog mix. The vet was adamant that it was most likely an appenzeller/australian shepherd mix. Oops! Looooooooooong walks for years to come I think! It is all good though.

Wrong, it was supposed to have been an entlebucher mix. The appenzeller is quite common in this neck of the woods but saying entlebucher sennen hund makes even the locals go boss eyed! So australian shepherd will at least be easier to explain when people ask us what breed he is.

Perhaps tempt him back with separate duvets. An normal artic one for him and a thin as a handkerchief duvet for you you cold loving freak Grin

ChocDee · 09/11/2011 18:49

Lol! Actually, we have an electric blanket with dual control and he sleeps fully fleeced up - trousers and sweater.

But he has never let me forget last year when we had a sudden snow storm. He woke up in the middle of the night covered in snow as he was the one sleeping closest to the window.

But the fresh air really seem to help with my hideously frequent headaches so he tries to put up with it nicely. But he is rebelling at the moment for some reason. Last year's snow must have traumatised him and he is having flash backs...

Aw, the poor snow traumatised love Grin

Your pup sounds lovely - is the pic on your profile of the pup? Am thinking not as it's a big dog but have no idea what the breeds are.

ChocDee · 09/11/2011 20:27

No the pic on the profile is of our old dog Ike who we sadly lost back in April taken about a year before. He had a broken leg at the time and I was panicking about wether we would have to let him go and came on here. But he hobbled on quite happily for another year after that.

I will try and add Niko as soon as possible.
