what should I expect? She's been home a few hours and whilst nurse said she,d be out of it for ages she just won,t settle and keeps wandering about.she,s had a bit of chicken and done a wee, but is just hanging around crying.

Should I do anything else?

We had our girlie done 2wks ago.
I sat next to her making her lie down(was a bit wobbly so seemed happy with that) Then we put her in her crate, so nice and confined too.
We had 5days of painkillers for her too, which helped.
Bouncing like a bleeding rabbit the next morning, though and had to spend next few days calming her down :o
Sure she'll be fine.

It'll take her until tomorrow to really get over the GA so you may be in for a whingy night from her I'm afraid. She should have plenty of pain relief on board from the op still but the anaesthetic drugs can make dogs very disorientated until the next day. If she's eaten a little and weed that's good, so hopefully by tomorrow she'll be a bit more with it. If you have any concerns overnight ring your vet, they should have 24 hour provisions even if you just need some advice or reassurance. The things to look out for which might be of real concern would be collapse, bleeding from the wound (you might get a little from the skin stitches but hopefully by now that should have stopped), or signs of severe abdominal pain (hunched back, crying out). The other thing to look out for is that she's not really pulling at her stitches, a little clean's fine but too much licking can introduce infection or cause the stitches to come out.

Thanks for your responses.

is better this morning but is very unhappy with her 'buster' collare as she can't get to food/water with it on..I understnd what its for and she is a licky/itchy type dog - but nurse mentioned putting t-shirt on her instead..any thoughts or expereinces of this.

I should just be a bit harder i suppose and put up with her whining.

She ate some chicken last night but has looked really unimpressed with her food this morning but wolfed down about 10 treats! so not sure if I should just persist with the dry food ( i mix it with hot water) or cave and give her more chicken....which I think will mean she will never go back to dried...

Try taking off the buster collar. I've never used one. Pop on a small t shirt instead if she won't leave herself alone.

See if she needs it first though. Perhaps put the buster collar on when she's alone if you think she'll fiddle with her stitches.

Is she still whining? If she is and continues to do it once the collars been off for a little while, I'd ring the vet and ask for a bit more pain relief. She doesn't need to hurt.

WRT food - get the collar off, let her settle down and try a little bit of dried food at lunchtime. If she won't eat it, try again at supper time. If she still won't eat at supper time, offer a little chicken and rice.

Then back to normal food again in the morning!

tks daisy - she's settled a bit in front of fire ( lit specially for her today!) at the mo , but looks terribly uncomfortable in collar , will it be a problem if she licks a bit? she's tried a couple of times when i had to sort collar out off her?

Can you just tell her to leave it in a stern voice?

It works a treat with mine. One of my girls had major, major abominal surgery a couple of months ago and had about 20 stitches down her tum. I didn't use a buster with her. I really don't like them.

I did have to watch her really closely, but it's only for a week or so.

And I am very soft. Smile

Thekingfisher · 08/11/2011 13:34

I've taken it off her and seh seems happier, may take her for a very short walk to the corner shop as I need a couple of things just for her to get out and about a bit - she keeps sticking her head through the cat flap to get some air!

Ooh she's just been really sick ....not really sure what to do next - she will be due her meta stuff ( painkillers) in a couple of hours but was told strictly not to give these unless she has eaten something..

Think I might just phone the vet

OP posts:
daisydotandgertie · 08/11/2011 14:57

Yes. Def ring the vet and don't give any Metacam - it can be v hard on the tum.

Thekingfisher · 08/11/2011 16:57

Just back from vet had another pain relief shot and some anti sickness stuff...hopefully she will be feeling better soon Sad

Poor thing. You were right - she wasn't at all happy.

How's she doing now? Hopefully much, much better.
