Intervertebral Disc Disease

I came home at lunch time to find my 4 year old corgi dragging his back legs. He'd been fine two hours earlier. I rushed him to the vet and the suspected diagnosis: Intervertebral Disc Disease he cannot move his legs at all although can feel deep pain when you pinch a toe, wag his tail a bit and his anus tenses when you touch it. My vet advised me that surgery is an option if the diagnosis was correct but the prognosis for him returning to a completely normal was poor. I have been advised to keep him very confined and give him anti inflamatories for 4 - 6 weeks but if he is incontinent then the kindest thing would be to put him down.
I love this dog very much but come from a farming back ground so am not overly sentimental and certainly don't believe in keeping an animal alive that is suffering or unlikely to make a full recovery. This dog is very sociable has always lived with another dog and adores us and is always coming for cuddles etc. My DS thinks its cruel that I have caged him up in a small space he cant turn around, (he's in my dinning room he can still see us but is now whining and scratching with his front legs) especially when he heard its for at 4 weeks. Interestingly my DH not a dog lover thought we should give him a chance.
Any thoughts?

How awful :( I've never heard of this condition, but if it came on so fast, you must all be a bit in shock at the moment. I wouldn't be making a decision until you've had time to process the news as well as doing some research.

I hope you see an improvement with the drugs and cage rest.
