Is my dog scared of the food in his bowl?!

Last week I ran out of usual dog food. Local supermarket sells a brand and type which he has liked before, so I thought ok use that just for now till I can go shopping, got one tin, gave him half with biscuits, he ate it.

Next day it was clear something was wrong, he was hot, had a dry nose, wouldn't eat, lethargic etc. Put down other half of tin but he wouldn't eat anything, not even his usual treats e.g., tuna. Eventually I came to throw the food in the bowl away and it stank of amonia, so clearly something wrong with it. I assumed this had been the problem.

He seemed to rally a bit, I got his normal brand of dog food but now he literally will not go near his bowl - he actually makes a big circle around it. Even if I put treats on top of the dog food he won't take them. He's been living for nearly a week on bits he can pinch from us at the table. I know dogs have long memories for bad experiences but this is ridiculous, he must be starving.

To be honest he's still not 100% himself but even so already today has chased the postman with usual gusto and eaten a dog chew. I've now taken the bowl away completely, there's just water down. So - is he ill or just traumatised by yucky food?

I know I won't eat rocket since I had food poisoning after eating it (wasn't the rocket but I still associate the two ifyswim) - is tinned dog food in a bowl now as rocket is to me?!

I'm by no means an expert, but have you tried feeding him from a different bowl?

Er - yes! Wink

Then that's all I had to offer! Grin See, told you I'm no expert...

have you tried a different bowl... in a different place?
have you tried feeding him his food as if it was a treat (a little bit from your hand, a spoon?

The vet should be your first stop, just in case.

After that stop feeding him treats from the table. Once he is hungry enough, he will eat.
